The aspects of GirlScript Summer of Code that I appreciate
GirlScript Summer of Code is a 3-month-long open-source program where participants contribute to a curated list of open-source projects and get rewarded at the end of the program.
I had the opportunity to participate in this program last year and, in this article, I am going to share a few aspects of the program that I appreciate.
Hassle-free application process
The application process is straightforward and less time-consuming. All you have to do is fill out a form with basic information and you are good to go.
Open to non-students as well
Unlike many other open-source programs, GirlScript Summer of Code accepts participants who are not students. This is a great opportunity for non-students who want to take that first step into open-source contribution through a well-structured program.
Contribute at your own pace
Participation in GirlScript Summer of Code does not have to be a part-time or full-time commitment. You are in charge of the amount of time you want to dedicate and the number of contributions you want to make.
A curated list of projects to choose from
During the contribution period, you are given a curated list of projects to choose from. These projects are selected to allow contributions from beginners and professionals alike.
Dedicated mentors for guidance
Each project in GirlScript Summer of Code has a dedicated team of mentors. Mentors help you to their fullest capacities. They assign you to issues, check if you are working on the issues, review your pull requests, ensure your pull requests get merged, and keep track of your scores.
GirlScript Summer of Code is an excellent program to begin your open-source journey, and I highly recommend it.
