Google pay’s add on feature
Problem statement
I have personally been using Google pay and other digital payments UPI platforms for paying and other transactions everyday. After the continuous use of these platforms I found that I cannot maintain the flow of the cash. And end up spending on too much of unwanted stuffs every month. So I wanted to find a solution for this.
User research
Initially I wanted to understand does other users too experience the same while using these application. So I started this case study with the primary research. I conducted qualitative research (i.e) the user interviews with few of the user groups to understand their behaviour, user journey and empathy while using those applications.
Research questions
About you | Describe you | Marital status | Occupation | Your interests | How to you manage your payments, spendings and bills | What UPI app you use | Why that app | How frequently you use the app | Pain-points | Understanding user task and activities | Could you describe the ideal experience.
Target audiences
Geography : India
Gender : Male 70% and Female 30%.
Age group : Primary (18–60) Secondary (60–70)
User persona
Using the answers and empathy collected from the users I built two fictional personas that represent the actual user group’s answers.
Secondary research
I also conducted secondary research across the web and gathered few references and collected some data about the UPI application. The data were like the number of transactions happening per month, the features the apps have.
My solution
To design an additional feature of analytics in Google pay to help the users know on what they are spending and also to add some money saving features that encourages the users to save money via the Google pay mobile application.
I choose google pay because of few reasons like :
When I made the secondary research, I found that Phone pe is the leading mobile app with average large number of transactions per month.
So here Google pay stands second next to phone pe.
I want to take this as a challenge and wanted to make the Google pay app as the no.1 transacting app, with the help of features that I add.
Positive outcomes in-terms of users :
Designing the insights feature gives the user much details on what they are spending and helps them to keep in track of their spendings, and guide them in a proper way on their spendings and also help them to boost their investment activity.
Positive outcome in-terms of product :
This feature actually builds trust on app for the users that this app helps them guiding in a right way not loosing their money. That increases the user base and thus this increase the transaction. And can help replace Phone pe as the no.1 transacting app.
User flows
I started working on the user flows using the personas and the ideations that I had personally. And worked on adding the features and also here I worked on organising the existing app structure.

Final UI's
Here I have 2 assumptions made in the investment section
To have a mutual fund investments within the google pay app powered by Google pay itself or by collaborating with popular products like Zerodha etc., And for stock investments just to promote the existing products like Zerodha, upstox etc. To embedd popular apps like Zerodha, Grow, Upstox etc., that work like progressive web app. This is assumed in a way that most of the users around 60% have accounts with these popular apps. So it will be easier for them to get started with. And also this initiates the addition of new users via Google pay and thus Google pay gets profited from them.
Final thoughts
I have used the scan option in the navigation in-order to not miss out actual product value proposition when focusing on enhancing the other features.
Also wanted to organise the bills and recharge section so wanted to add that to the nav bar. The users and I also feel like the home page is little cluttered. So wanted to organise the bills and payments section separately.
