Outreachy - Week Ten

General Rant

This week, I mostly focused on making sure I had all the details i'd need for the weekly meeting. It involved asking my mentors what to add on the agenda and trying to make sure i didn't miss anything that should be talked about. My mentor (Elizabeth; the community manager at CHAOSS) is always so helpful with these things, she makes it easy to participate and do things in the community. I'm super grateful for her.

The core thing on the agenda was having the metrics i and another community member (Oma) reviewed (yay for us!) brought to the community and have them vet it. We got to learn about an interesting metric that was being reviewed; Sponsorship in the professional community. The one where you get help that puts your name in certain places and speaks for you so you can climb higher on the professional ladder, not the monetary one.

It was interesting because that was the first time some of the people in the community were hearing about it. So, we left it open for more digging in and ways we can apply it to our community. I personally think it's a very interesting metric. If you read this let me know what you think about that term and what it means to you.

It's really important to note how much being at CHAOSS has made me realise the concept of inclusivity and diversity. We have metrics that consider people of all abilities and ethnicity. Even as inclusive as creating metrics for caregivers or people who are nursing children.

The tech community has a lot to learn from the community and it'd be super cool if more and more open source communities adopted augur to measure these things.

Stuff I Learned This Week?

• I don't know as much as I should about technical writing, and I should spend more time than I already do learning about it.
• Give a few talks, and most people assume you're an expert on the subject. That's a tricky situation to be in sometimes. Still, I won't turn down an opportunity to share my knowledge on something or help out with representation.
• Putting yourself out there isn't always pretty and be very nerve-wracking, but representation has to be done.
• Once you keep on doing something, the stage fright that comes with it would be easier to manage. It might never leave entirely, but you'd somehow learn how to do stuff in the midst of the nerves and never-ending anxiety.
• I might need a break for a while, a period where I spend more time learning.
