My Career Roadmap in Tech
Table of contents
Introduction
Thinking of starting a career in tech but it all seems very ambiguous for you. It gets very overwhelming and confusing. I understand that feeling, I have been there and to a good extent, I am beginning to get a hang of the Tech world. I know there is a whole lot to learn and we will get there eventually.
On my journey of transitioning to tech and my career in Product Design. I recently started a 7-month internship with the Ada Software Engineering Internship.
I am scared, enthusiastic and ready for the journey. I believe it's normal to have those feelings of uncertainty when starting something new but we shouldn't let that derail us from the task ahead.
A part of the pre-course task which we were given. A well-detailed video on designing a tech career roadmap was shared with us to watch and to share all the wonderful things we learned.
Watching this video exposed me to a whole lot which I am super grateful for and would love to share them. The speaker was so detailed and exceptional in her explanations, Yewande Odumuso, Treford. "Designing a Tech Career Roadmap". Youtube, 22, Jan.2022, ,she also went ahead to give references to different individuals who have and are still excelling greatly in their tech career path.
I will go ahead to give an excerpt on the video. Let's dive straight ahead to it!
What is a Career Roadmap?
A career roadmap is a plan that outlines your career path and the steps necessary to achieve your goals. It can be used as a guide to help you make future decisions while also keeping track of your desired career goals. Having a career roadmap will act as a useful guide to my career growth. We have linear and non linear career roadmaps.
Roles in Tech
We have Technical and Non- technical roles in tech. Under the Technical roles, we have Web developers, UX/UI designers, Mobile app developers, Data scientists, Cloud Engineers, Software Engineers etc.
While under the Non-technical roles the following roles can be seen; Data Analyst, Product Managers, Digital Marketers, Customer Success, HR, Finance, Solutions Architect etc.
How to start in tech
When transitioning into tech, of course, the confusion will be there on what to do, how to start, and what courses you should take. From the video that I watched I intend to do the following.
You can start by finding out what sparks you, and what interests you in the various tech career paths. Find that out.
-Then if you've had that figured out, take an introductory course on that we have different platforms you can use to learn such as Youtube, Coursera, Udemy etc.
-It's also important you leverage tech communities, and join different communities as you will learn a whole lot from that.
Networking is very important and it's through these communities you get to expand your network this would stimulate your growth.
-Start practising, and building projects on your selected path at this point you would probably do more volunteer work, build for friends and family etc, this would help to broaden your experience and also build on your portfolio.
-It would also be helpful to have a mentor in your field whether directly or indirectly, someone whom you know you can learn from or look up to in your career path.
-Keep learning and expanding on your knowledge.
### Ways to stand out as a techie
At this present time where we have a large proportion of individuals who are already in tech and those still transitioning to tech. So the need to be seen better in what you do arises. The following ways can be adopted;
- You should have a good work ethics
- Learn to share your work online
- Adopt an ownership mindset
- Ensure to produce high-quality work
- Network
- You should also hold a good attitude
- Document your journey and work
Always show up and be visible, especially among the community you are a part of whether online or offline.
As for me who is still a beginner in tech, I intend to intentionally put in the necessary effort and commitment that would support my tech career. I would also follow all these and more that I have learned and will still learn to ensure I succeed. I would also enroll myself on courses online and offline through various platforms such as Coursera, Udemy, Udacity etc. in a bid to improve on myself more.
If you've read up to this point, then I am sure you have learnt a thing or two from what I also learned from the incredible video I watched.
Let me know in the comment section what you learned from this post.
