This should be the second most important thing you should do when you come to the US and the first is a bank account.

To get SSN:

  1. Call this number to schedule an appointment 1-800-772-1213
  2. Carry the required documents
  3. Be present on time at the date of appointment
  4. Once the security check is complete you will be allowed in
  5. Once you are in the office you need to use the automated machine to generate a token number
  6. Talk to the officer and provide all the details
  7. You should get your SSN in 2 weeks' time.
  8. Make sure to keep the letter safe.
