what is a computer?

A computer is an electronic device that performs operations, and calculations, and manipulates data according to a set of instructions, called a program. It has the ability to store, retrieve and process data.

what is an operating system?

An operating system (OS) is a software program that manages a computer's hardware and software resources, providing a platform for running applications. It acts as an interface between the computer hardware and the user, providing essential services such as file management, memory management, process management, and security. Examples of popular operating systems are Windows, MacOS, and Linux.

what is an application?

An application (or app) is a software program designed to perform a specific task or set of functions. It is a self-contained program that runs on a computer or mobile device and serves a particular purpose, such as word processing, web browsing, gaming, or social media. Applications can be installed on a computer or mobile device and run directly on the device, or they can be run on remote servers and accessed through a web browser.

open-sourced vs closed-sourced software

Open source software refers to software whose source code is publicly available and can be modified and distributed by anyone. The development of open-source software is usually collaborative, with contributions from a community of developers worldwide. Examples of open-source software include the Linux operating system and the Apache web server software.

Closed source software, on the other hand, is proprietary software for which the source code is not available to the public. The software is owned by a company or individual and is typically licensed for use, with restrictions on copying, modifying, and redistributing the software. Examples of closed-source software include Microsoft Windows and Adobe Photoshop.

The main difference between the two is the level of control and access to the software's code and the freedom to modify and distribute it. Open-source software is generally considered more transparent and flexible, while closed-source software is often seen as more secure and easier to use.
