My experience with the Hertechtrail Cohort 5 program
I want to start by expressing my sincere gratitude to the program's organizers, sponsors, and trainers for allowing me to participate in this outstanding initiative.
I applied to join the cohort in July of last year, and after waiting for the academy to get back to me after about a month, I was a little concerned that I did not meet up certain requirements. Nevertheless, I remained hopeful that I would be accepted and checked my email once a week to see if I had missed any correspondence from the academy. I received an email confirming my enrollment in Cohort 5 and I couldn't have been more excited to start my learning journey.
The program officially kicked off in November last year and I got into the Frontend developer starter track. We started with the basics of Frontend development as it was essential for us to get a proper understanding of the concept before diving deep. During the cohort, we had classes every weekend for us to also meet up with our weekly activities such as work or school. Saturdays and Sundays were fixed as lecture days, and after every class, tasks were assigned to us to give a proper understanding of what was taught and also to give us room to practice what we learn as that is seen as the best way one can become a good developer.
The coaches covered a wide range of frontend programming subjects, but "git and GitHub" was one that I became familiar with. For the first time, I felt confident working in the git bash terminal without making any mistakes, and I was pleased with my advancements. In addition, I learned how to push my code to Github and also clone or fork projects when working on expansive projects or open-source contributions in general.
We were all assigned a project to work on during the cohort's final stage, which was to create a website for our portfolios. Here is a link to what I was able to do: Portfolio website.
I would say that overall, I had a positive training experience. If I had to rate it, I'd give it a solid 10/10. I have to give credit to the coaches because they did an outstanding job training us. They took the time to explain anything to anyone who was unclear or didn't fully grasp a particular concept, and the classes were engaging and interactive because we all shared the same levels of reasoning. Cheers to coaches Maggy and Jessie!
