The Brutal Reality of Being a Newbie in Tech in Africa: Overcoming Challenges and Achieving Success.
Overview
Being a newbie in tech can be a daunting journey, no matter where you are in the world. PS. I'm from Nigeria, so it's a multiple of your challenges by 100. However, when you add challenges such as limited funding, lack of support, and unreliable power (especially in some parts of Africa) and internet, it can feel downright impossible. But don't give up hope just yet. In this blog post, we'll explore the struggles of a newbie in tech and uncover some key solutions for success
Strategies for success.
The journey of a newbie in tech is often riddled with challenges. From understanding complex programming languages to figuring out how to build a website from scratch, the learning curve can be steep. However, there are solutions to these challenges.
One key solution is to make a habit of reading code every day, even when you're tired. It may be in the office, or school or business place. Just like learning a new language, becoming fluent in code takes time and practice. Dedicate just 5 to 20 minutes a day to reading code, no matter how extremely tired you may be, and gradually increase the time as you become more comfortable. You'll soon start to recognize the structure and patterns of code, making it easier to understand and write your own code.
Another solution is to dedicate your weekends to working on projects. This way, you can focus on your work without the distractions of work or school. Following the principles of "sprints" in the tech industry and other industries at large, it is important to dedicate a huge chunk of time for projects on your "off days". This can be added to your resume in the long run, giving your resume a higher chance for an interview. Even if you don't have access to reliable power or internet, you can still work offline and save your progress for when you have a connection.
Networking is also crucial to success. Join online groups, attend virtual events, and seek out mentorship opportunities to connect with other professionals in the industry. You can learn a lot from other people's experiences and gain valuable insights into the world of tech.
Lastly, don't be afraid to ask for help. As a newbie in tech, it's normal to feel overwhelmed or lost at times. Reach out to more experienced professionals for guidance, and take advantage of online resources like tutorials and forums.
Conclusion.
The journey of a newbie in tech can be tough, but it's not impossible. By dedicating time to reading code every day, working on projects on weekends, networking with other professionals, and seeking out help when needed, you can overcome the challenges and succeed in the tech industry. Remember, it's not about having all the answers, but about having the drive to keep learning and improving.
