Augmented Reality (AR) has opened up exciting possibilities for creating immersive digital experiences that seamlessly integrate with the real world, and NLP(Natural Language Processing) has proved to play a vital role there. In this article, we will explore how NLP enhances conversational UI in AR.

1. Understanding NLP(Natural Language Processing)in AR :

  • NLP is a field of AI that enables systems or computers to understand, interpret & respond in a human-like manner. Natural Language processing bridges the gap between Virtual objects and their users.

  • NLP encompasses various Machine Learning algorithms and components including sentimental analysis, text processing, etc.

  • Example: AI Chatbots such as Google Bard and Chat-GPT.

2. Building Conversational Interfaces in AR :

The Conversational User Interface initiates the request by the user and that request is processed by NLP algorithms which is further processed using Deep learning models and hence, the bot understands/processes and then generates a response for the request.

  • The Interfaces which allow the users to interact with virtual objects using spoken or written language are called Conversational UI, Hence NLP plays a crucial role to enable seamless and Intuitive interactions in these interfaces.

  • NLP algorithms are responsible for extracting relevant information and generating desired responses.

  • NLP also helps to overcome challenges that come across while designing the AR(Conversational UI) system by handling errors such as Speech Recognition.

3. Overcoming challenges in NLP in AR conversations :

  • As we already discussed in the above point, NLP has been a helping hand while designing effective CUI’s through error handling which ensured seamless operation of the Conversational Interface(CUI).

  • Errors such as Speech Recognition Failure in noisy AR environments can affect the speech recognition algorithms to interpret accurate responses. Also, here NLP algorithms handle Human errors such as incomplete information/queries.

Now let’s understand the whole concept with an example!

Suppose you are exploring a Historical site using the AR application interface on your phone. As we walk through the site, we encounter various historical monuments, Ancient artifacts, Characters, Places, etc. So, with the help of NLP-based CUI’s, we can engage in interactive conversations with the NLP model(AI). For example, We generate a query or send a request “Tell me about this particular monument?” The request is then processed through the interface and a response is generated by the AI through the interface.
