I am currently in the final stage of my first year in computer science engineering, I have gone through this experience, and so I am giving insights and advice to my younger brothers and sisters. You step into college with a mixture of expectations and hopes. Some of us want to build a better future, somebody wants to enjoy every moment, and others are eager to explore different aspects of life. It's a time filled with possibilities and opportunities. However, the biggest difference between junior college and senior college is the absence of spoon-feeding. In senior college, you have to learn to help yourself. This blog aims to equip you with essential DOs and DON'Ts for your first year of engineering.

To ensure a smooth reading experience, I've developed my blog into several sections, covering the specific aspects of college life. This way, you can easily find the information you need and absorb it more effectively.

Section 1: Study Management and Techniques

If you have cleared entrance exams like JEE or CET, first-year engineering studies may seem easier in comparison. However, it's crucial not to ignore them. While there might be a relatively relaxed atmosphere after 12th grade, it's important to maintain a good CGPA in the first year. Clearing all subjects is vital, so focus on making comprehensive lecture notes and maximizing your understanding during the classes. This approach will save you time during the preparation of examinations.

Section 2: Building Relationships and Networking

College is not just about academics; it's also an excellent opportunity to build connections. Find people who are experts in your domain and connect with them on social media. Open a LinkedIn and Twitter account and get connected with amazing people. Try to attend conferences and talks and enlist friends who share the same mindset.

Section 3: Balancing Academics and Extracurricular Activities

While academics are important, maintaining a balanced lifestyle is equally crucial. Discover the tips for managing your time between coursework, extracurricular activities, and personal life. Join various college clubs and activity groups to improve your social skills as well as life skills such as leadership, time management, attitude building, self-esteem etc.

Section 4: Overcoming Challenges

In the first year, the biggest challenge is time management. Learn the skill of time management. Write assignments and journals on time. Try to complete all the write-ups during college time, during off lectures or during recess. If you face any difficulties, talk with professors or friends.

Section 5: Accessing Resources and Tools

Find YouTube channels related to your course. Ask seniors to share links to the channels they followed. Read books and documentation for better understanding. Communicate with professors to get notes and study materials.

Tips for Computer Science Students:

Learn any programming language in the first semester and clear the fundamentals. I would suggest starting with Python as it is easy to understand. After that, start learning data structures and algorithms in C++ or Java. Practice DSA daily on platforms like LeetCode or GeeksforGeeks. In the second semester, learn any development field like web development or Android development. There are plenty of free resources available on YouTube, so don't buy any paid courses. It's a waste of money and time.
