Introduction

Picture a child, utterly captivated by the mystifying world of computers, enthralled by the marvels behind moving images and interactive games. That was me. However, circumstances and life's twists and turns caused my early passion to flicker.

Growing up in North Africa, specifically Algeria, my life took an unexpected turn when I embarked on a new adventure in Sweden. The transition was not without its hurdles. Adapting to a novel culture and mastering unfamiliar languages was a herculean task.

Amidst the adaptation, a dormant passion for computers reignited within me, and it led me back to my original fascination: coding. This was not only a path back to my childhood curiosity but also a bridge to personal growth and self-fulfillment.

Join me as I narrate my remarkable journey, from my beginnings in Algeria to navigating a new life in Sweden, where I trained as an electrician before ultimately finding my true calling as a software developer. Let's delve into the defining moments and personal victories that guided me toward the world of coding. This tale demonstrates the undeniable power of perseverance, resilience, and unwavering determination.

Childhood Years

As a child growing up in Algeria, my encounters with computers were scarce, yet their impact was profound. While other kids were busy with outdoor play and toys, I was drawn toward the mesmerizing world of arcade games.

However, computers were rare commodities in my homeland at that time. They were seen as luxuries only a privileged few could afford. Despite the barriers, my fascination with computers grew, sparking a yearning to unravel the inner workings of these machines.

My early encounters with arcade games sowed seeds of curiosity within me. This marked the beginning of my lifelong journey into coding, bridging the gap between humble beginnings and a future brimming with potential.

Life in Algeria

Growing up in Algeria was a vibrant yet challenging experience. It shaped my character and sparked my curiosity. Living under one roof with my entire family, our home was filled with laughter, love, and life's simple pleasures.

Education in Algeria was an enriching journey despite resource limitations. I was fortunate to study various languages, including French, Kabyl, and Arabic, which nurtured an appreciation for diverse cultures. This laid the foundation for my future travels and my journey into the global tech community.

It was during my academic journey in Algeria that my love for problem-solving and analytical thinking began to flourish, particularly through my favorite subject, Math. The discipline's nature echoed in the problem-solving aspect of coding, a connection I'd only realize years later.

The vibrant pixels on the arcade game screens weren't just a source of amusement; they symbolized a realm of unexplored opportunities, fueling my ambition to delve into programming. The dream to create such interactive magic seemed unattainable for a child without resources, yet the seed was sown.

This phase of my life, marked by hardships, was also filled with dreams and aspirations. My modest upbringing in Algeria laid the groundwork for my relentless pursuit of knowledge, eventually leading me to the pulsating tech hubs of Sweden. A journey I could only dream of during those early years in Algeria was about to unfold.

Emigration to Sweden

Our decision to emigrate to Sweden - my mother, my little sister, and I - was sparked by the promise of a better life, a shared aspiration among those seeking a fresh start. But it was a journey laden with challenges, requiring considerable resources, time, and patience. My mother had to sell our house to raise the funds needed for our tickets and initial survival in the new country.

Upon our arrival in Sweden, we found ourselves grappling with a whirlwind of changes. Cultural adjustment, language acquisition, and integrating into a new societal system tested our resilience at every step. We leaned on the kindness and support of others during those initial years, moving from place to place until we could firmly root ourselves within the Swedish community. We finally attained Swedish citizenship, and I remain eternally grateful to the Swedish people who lent their help, knowledge, and support during our transition.

The task of mastering a new language and adapting to an unfamiliar culture was indeed monumental. But armed with determination, I embraced these challenges as opportunities for personal growth and transformation. Although the process was gradual, my unwavering perseverance paid off, and I gained proficiency in the Swedish language.

These experiences significantly shaped my career path. As I worked towards mastering the Swedish language, I found a companion in old computers, particularly through educational applications that offered interactive learning experiences. These encounters reignited my love for technology and coding, fueling a passion that would profoundly influence my future aspirations.

Transitioning Careers

Despite the security and decent pay of my work as an electrician, I couldn't shake a persistent feeling of dissatisfaction. I craved more - a career where I could be a creator, a problem solver, not just a 'doer.' I yearned for a path that would allow me to explore my innate curiosity and creativity, which had been somewhat subdued in my role as an electrician.

My dormant fascination with technology began to resurface. The vivid memories of arcade games, my childhood curiosity about the tech that powered them, and the burning questions they had provoked in me, all came flooding back.

One summer day, I made a leap of faith. I resigned from my secure job, fully conscious of the uncertainty that lay ahead. Filled with hope and some trepidation, I applied to university, uncertain of my chances. I was thrilled when the admission letter arrived, marking the beginning of my transformation from an electrician to a software engineer. Although challenging, every lecture, practical lab session and interaction with my peers and professors reinforced my love for coding and affirmed my decision.

Skills from Previous Profession

My time as an electrician was not a discarded chapter in my life. The experiences and skills I gained during that period have influenced my journey as a software developer in many surprising ways.

While working as an electrician, I regularly interacted with clients to resolve their issues and understand their requirements. These interactions sharpened my communication skills and enhanced my ability to understand the customer's perspective, invaluable assets in the realm of software development.

Managing multiple projects as an electrician, coordinating teams, and working with strict timelines honed my leadership abilities and project management skills. These traits have been essential in my journey as a developer, equipping me to plan and execute tasks efficiently.

Self-Learning and Formal Education

The journey to becoming a software engineer was not solely shaped by my formal education. Self-learning played an equally pivotal role in my growth as a coder, and it was this synergy of structured learning and personal exploration that molded me into the developer I am today.

Even while working as an electrician, I frequently found myself on YouTube and Udemy, investing countless hours into understanding the world of software engineers and learning the basics of coding. I dabbled in various programming languages, delved into tutorials, and attempted to mirror the processes I saw. This journey, brimming with challenges and rewarding 'eureka' moments, was incredibly fulfilling.

My time at the university, however, was when my skills began to flourish. The blend of theoretical insights and hands-on coding experiences offered me a comprehensive understanding of the industry. The guidance from my professors, the camaraderie with my peers, and the competitive yet nurturing academic atmosphere served as the perfect incubator for my budding coding skills.

Pursuing Coding

In coding, I quickly discovered that theoretical knowledge wasn't enough; the real test lay in its practical application. I started working on personal projects, designing small applications, and progressively refining them.

I took up freelance projects, diving headlong into the professional world of coding while still at university. These experiences, although challenging, only reaffirmed my passion for the field. The gratification I derived from unraveling complex coding issues was unmatched by any of my previous professional experiences.

Throughout this process, I sought the mentorship of seasoned developers and joined online coding communities. Each connection offered a fresh perspective, support, and valuable insights that have helped me grow as a developer. These relationships have been instrumental in my journey, providing not only technical guidance but also much-needed encouragement during challenging periods.

Overcoming Challenges

Learning to code was far from a walk in the park. The logic and syntax of programming languages were alien to me; it was akin to learning an entirely new language. Every line of code initially seemed enigmatic and daunting. There were moments of doubt and frustration when I questioned my decision and contemplated giving up, as the obstacles seemed too steep.

However, remembering past hurdles and the resilience I'd demonstrated to overcome them, I was determined not to yield to the pressure. I drew inspiration from stories of successful developers, understanding that they too had faced similar challenges. This resilience encouraged me to confront the hurdles head-on and reaffirmed my commitment to continue learning. After all, I was pursuing my dream, and I envisioned a future where I would excel at it.

Embracing a Developer Identity

A significant validation of my journey came during a university course, 'Project Team.' Our task was to develop a web and mobile application for CGI to aid customer service for the elderly. The project aimed to allow seniors to create personal accounts, select, and order specific food items, with a system alerting them of potential allergies or other risks.

This project marked a turning point in my journey - it was my transition from being a student to a professional developer. I was no longer just learning the syntax; I was now leveraging it to create real-world solutions.

The milestones didn't stop there. My venture into freelancing on Fiverr introduced me to a spectrum of clients, allowing me to implement my skills in practical, problem-solving scenarios. Another proud achievement was the successful launch of my REST API projects on the Rapid API platform.
