It's with great pleasure that I welcome you to my first blog post. If you're reading this, you're one of the few people witnessing the beginning of my tech blogging journey. The feelings I harbor writing this piece are feelings of anxiety and uncertainty, but more predominantly of excitement, and anticipation, much like I felt when I wrote my first line of code four months ago.

Hello, world!

My name is Daniel Herbert, and I am a veterinary doctor training to become a full-stack software engineer. I quit my job as a clinician in a 5-star veterinary center in Lagos, Nigeria, to focus on developing tech skills, starting by enrolling in the ALX Africa software engineering program.

My passion for software engineering was birthed from an existing desire to provide innovative solutions to challenges I observed in my community. Going through vet school, I faced constraints in grasping veterinary gross anatomy (a study of animal tissues, organs, and body systems). I had to depend mostly on my imagination to understand the structures I read about. This constraint led me to imagine other education models powered by 3D art, web3, virtual, and augmented reality. Of course, I lacked the technical knowledge for my imagination to be precise then, but I dared to imagine. Therefore, I decided to become a software engineer to develop the necessary skills and network to provide tech solutions to challenges faced in Nigeria and Africa in general in education and health primarily.

My reason for starting this blog is to share my journey with my colleagues in the ALX program and other tech programs and share the knowledge I would consistently acquire along this journey in my unique understanding. Currently, I am learning the C programming language as an introduction to computer science, so most of my blog posts will be centered around the C language. I would also be writing about non-technical topics important to the software engineer. However, as my experience as a software engineering student (and blogger) evolves, so will the content of my blog.

It means a lot to me that you are joining me on this journey, and I encourage you to watch out for more posts from me. Do well to engage me in the comment section, as I would always love to know your perspective on the topics I write about. What clearer view could there be than in the diversity of perspectives? If you find my posts interesting, please don't hesitate to click the like button and share my post in your tech spaces. Interacting with you on my social media handles would also be a pleasure.

Lastly, if you can relate to my story in that you have meant to start something but have been anxious or uncertain about how it would go, I encourage you: simply start. You'll never know how it could go unless you try.

See you in my next post.

Cheers!

I am a veterinary doctor who left a job at a 5-star veterinary clinic in Lagos, Nigeria, to pursue a dream to become a software engineer. Going through vet school, and practicing for 5 years, I discovered gaps in the education and health sectors in Nigeria, which could be filled through simple tech solutions. My vision is to develop the necessary skills to be able to provide such solutions. I am currently training at ALX Africa to become a full-stack software engineer. Join me on this journey
