What is OSI Model?

OSI Model stands for Open System Interconnection Model, It was proposed by ISO(International Organization for Standardization) in 1984.

The main motive behind proposing the OSI Model was to standardize the way present systems communicate with each other within a network.

It describes all the phases and stages followed by a machine to either communicate or transfer data from the application of one system to another system using physical links.

Key features of the OSI Model

The key features provided by the OSI model were:-

1) International Standardization

OSI model being proposed by ISO which is a globally recognized organization results in globally accepting the OSI Model for network communication.

2) Modularity

By dividing network communication into separate layers, the OSI model promotes modularity. This means that changes or updates to one layer don't necessarily require modifying the other layers, as long as the interfaces between the layers remain consistent. This simplifies network development and maintenance.

3) Clarity

OSI model provides a systematic and hierarchical approach for the network by dividing it into 7 different layers which help in increasing the understanding of the network.

Layers of OSI Model

OSI model is divided into 7 layers:-

  • Application Layer

  • Presentation Layer

  • Session Layer

  • Transport Layer

  • Network Layer

  • Data Link Layer

  • Physical Layer
