From Novice to Innovator: My First Month at TIIDELab

Stepping into TIIDELab, I was excited and nervous, knowing that out of thousands of applicants, I was selected as one of the 75 fellows. The feeling of accomplishment and gratitude was overwhelming. As the days passed, I realized that this experience would be more transformative and inspiring than I could have ever imagined.

My typical day at TIIDELab begins with a heart-pounding CCAT (Critical Thinking and Aptitude Test) at 9 am. The test challenges my problem-solving skills and cognitive abilities, but it also serves as a wake-up call, setting the tone for a day filled with learning and growth. By 9:15 am, we all gather for a relaxing jam session. The power of music unites us, relieving the tension from the test and getting us ready for the day ahead.

The next phase of my day involves diving into Slack, where I find our concise learning materials. The learning materials are carefully curated to ensure we acquire the necessary knowledge and skills for our projects. I take this time seriously and study diligently, knowing that each piece of information will be crucial in shaping my understanding of the subject matter.

The highlight of my day is the peer review session with my family, the "Innovation Squad." This group of talented individuals has become my support system and sounding board. We share insights, challenge each other's ideas, and provide constructive feedback on what we have learned. It's incredible to witness the diverse perspectives and innovative approaches that each member brings to the table. These peer review sessions have been instrumental in honing my communication and teamwork skills

Presenting what we've learned is both nerve-wracking and exhilarating. I feel a mix of excitement and anticipation as I showcase the results of my hard work. The feedback I receive from the Innovation Squad is invaluable; it helps me refine my ideas and identify areas for improvement. Waiting for the corrections can be anxiety-inducing, but I understand that it's all part of the learning process.

During this month, I formed a strong bond with my coding partner, Uloka Ngozi Gift, affectionately known as GifftyBabe😉. We complement each other's strengths and weaknesses, making us an effective and efficient duo. The camaraderie we share goes beyond coding; we support and motivate each other in all aspects of the program.

The physical sessions held bi-weekly on Fridays are a breath of fresh air. Engaging in team-building exercises allows us to connect personally and strengthen our relationships. These sessions have a way of reinforcing the sense of belonging to a larger TIIDELab family.

Yet, my journey extends beyond the confines of the TIIDELab. Armed with newfound communication skills, I approached the owner of Belham Equestrian Centre with a pitch for a membership app and their website. This endeavor was born from the fertile soil of my learning, nourished by my dedication to software development. The result? A bespoke polo membership app, tailored to their needs and streamlined to perfection.

In conclusion, my first month at TIIDELab has been nothing short of transformative. From the heart-aching CCATs to the engaging jam sessions, the concise learning materials, and the peer review sessions, each experience has contributed to my personal and professional growth. The friendships I've formed, have made this journey even more fulfilling. As I eagerly await the next phase of the program, I am confident that TIIDELab will continue to nurture and challenge me, equipping me with the skills and knowledge to thrive in the world of innovation and technology.
