What is Web5?

When you hear the term Web5, what do you think? I can guess what you are thinking. "Web5?'". "How did it get to Web5?". "Did I miss Web4?". "Was I under a rock or something?". Well don't be scared, you didn't miss Web4 because it hasn't happened yet.

Now how did we arrive at the term Web5? The term Web5 was coined by TBD (To Be Decentralized), the crypto and decentralized finance division of Jack Dorsey's payment company, Block (formerly Square). It emerged by combining Web3 (an internet-fueled by blockchain-based smart contracts) with Web2 (centralized content platforms such as Twitter or Facebook). In simple terms, it's the sum of 3 + 2, resulting in 5. TBD introduced the Web5 platform in June 2022, building on Web3 technology and pledging to provide "an even more decentralized web platform."

Imagine a world where you, as an individual, hold the keys to your digital identity, your data, and your online experiences. Now, we have all had that experience where we search for an item or talk about it and boom, we see an ad relating to it. With Web5, we have full control and choose who has access to view our data and information and can monetize this access if we want to.

The Core Principles of Web5

  1. User Empowerment and Data Ownership: Web5 empowers individuals by granting control over digital identities and personal data. This stands in contrast to the current norm, where centralized platforms hold and monetize our data without explicit consent.

  2. Enhanced Privacy and Security: In the current Web2 system, our identities and information are spread across various platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X and other platforms. This exposes us to data breaches and unauthorized surveillance. Web5 introduces a decentralized identity management system known as DIDs (Decentralized Identifiers). With DIDs, individuals have control over their digital identities, securely stored on a distributed network. We'll delve deeper into DIDs later. Decentralized networks are more resistant to data breaches, and blockchain technology ensures our data is tamper-proof, reducing the risk of unauthorized modifications.

  3. Interoperability: Web5 applications and protocols are designed to seamlessly interact with each other, bringing about a more interconnected and user-friendly experience. This is a crucial aspect of Web5 which enables seamless communication and data exchange between different applications and protocols. This is in contrast to the current state of the internet where applications operate individually making it difficult to access your data across different platforms. This is achieved through standardized protocols and open-source technologies. This allows users to seamlessly move between applications and services without losing access to their data or context.

    Imagine a world where you easily and seamlessly move from one social platform to another without providing all your data, your data will flow seamlessly across different platforms you give access to. Your data would not be confined to individual platforms but would seamlessly flow across your digital ecosystem.

    Here are some specific examples of how interoperability benefits Web5 users:

    • Data portability: Users can easily transfer their data between different applications and services, eliminating the need to manually re-enter information or recreate accounts.

    • Universal logins: Users can authenticate with a single identity across multiple applications, simplifying the login process and enhancing security.

    • Cross-platform compatibility: Users can access and utilize data from different applications in a unified manner, regardless of the underlying platform or device.

Challenges of web5

Despite its promising potential, Web5 faces several challenges:

  • Scalability: Ensuring Web5 can handle the growth of usage is a crucial challenge. It must handle this without sacrificing performance or efficiency, which is especially tough due to Web5's decentralized nature. Factors like transaction processing speed, data storage, and network bandwidth can contribute to scalability challenges.

  • Usability: A simplified user interface and experience is essential in the adoption of Web5 technologies into the lives of the user. Web5 applications are built on the foundation of decentralized protocols and blockchain technology which can be difficult for a non-technical user, unlike Web2 which applications are built with the user experience at the forefront and prioritizes it over the technical details.

    • User-Friendly Interfaces: Development of interfaces that are easy to navigate and understand by all users regardless of their technical know-how.

While the benefits of Web5 are undeniable, there is an absence of clear and effective regulations poses a significant challenge to its responsible development and adoption. Clear and effective regulations for Web5 are a required feature to prevent a breeding ground for fraud, scams, and data breaches, jeopardizing user privacy and security.

DIDs: The Dawn of a Decentralized Digital Identity Era

In this digital age, our identities and data reside on the cloud and online. However, concerns have arisen about the traditional centralized systems that manage our digital identities. People now question the true safety of their data. Some even express the belief that they are being watched. Who can blame them? I mentioned earlier the instance of ads popping up based on our discussions or conversations.

This is where Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) come in. They offer a solution by empowering individuals to own and manage their digital identities in a secure and self-sovereign manner.

What are DIDs?

Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) are a new type of identifier that gives you a verifiable, decentralized digital identity. A DID can belong to a person, an organization or even an object. Even a baby can have a DID. Unlike traditional identifiers, such as email addresses or social media handles, DIDs are not tied to a single platform. Instead, they are tied to decentralized blockchain networks and can be used across different platforms. Each DID is associated with a DID document, which stores information about the entity, such as its name, contact details, and public keys.

The DID document is more like an Identity card that verifies the authenticity of the DID owner.

The Benefits of DIDs

DIDs offer several compelling advantages over traditional centralized identity systems:

  • Self-sovereignty: As a user, you will have absolute control over the information that is associated with your DID.

  • Privacy: DIDs give the user full access to share only parts of their data. You can choose to let a platform not see your search history and so many other wonderful things you can control.

  • Security: DIDs are anchored on decentralized blockchain networks, making them highly resistant to tampering and fraud.

Decentralized Web Nodes: The Building Blocks of Web3

In today's digital world, we are dependent on centralized platforms like Google, Facebook, and Amazon to store our data, access information, and interact with others. These platforms have their benefits but there are still concerns about data security and monetization.

We know that when we delete our profile or a post on a platform, it does not really and truly delete because it still exists in the databases of these platforms. With Decentralized Web Nodes (DWNs), each node is owned by a DID; therefore, we own our data, and we own our databases.

A DID can be connected to multiple DWNs. Let me paint a picture for you: let's say Facebook, Instagram, and X are all Web5 platforms. When we open these platforms, all we need to provide is our DID, and then a DWN will be created for us for that platform and linked to our DID.

A DWN is so flexible that it can be used to store a wide array of data, ranging from text, images and videos.
