Installing and configuring NymConnect

NymConnect is an easy-to-use interface that allows you to connect other applications to Nym mixnet for privacy protection.

Use NymConnect to protect the privacy of Telegram, Electrum and Blockstream Green (or any other application that can run over SOCKS5).

In this article, we will look at how to connect NymConnect to Telegram.

Download NymConnect

Go to the Download section of the Nym website and select NymConnect

Next, select the operating system that suits your computer and click Download. Save the installation file to your computer. In my example it will be Windows

Installation

Run the downloaded installation file by double-clicking the mouse and proceed with the installation by clicking Next

Choose a folder for installation. I leave it as default. If you want to save to a different directory, click Change....

Click Install to start the installation process

The system may ask for permission to install, grant it by clicking "Yes". After the installation is complete, you will see a message:

Click Finish and proceed to configure NymConnect.

Configuring NymConnect

The NymConnect panel will appear in front of you. Telegram is added to NymConnect by default.

Click "Connect" (circle in the center) - the host and port will be displayed.

Open the Telegram proxy settings. To do this:

1. Open the Telegram app on your device.

2. Tap the menu icon in the top left corner of the screen (three horizontal lines).

3. Select "Settings" from the menu.

4. Tap on "Advanced" in the settings.

   

   1. Select "Connection Type"

      

      1. Use proxy settings.

         

         1. Select SOCKS5 and verify that the port data is the same as that created by NymConnect.

            

            Alternatively, follow this link: https://t.me/socks?server=127.0.0.1&port=1080 .

            Save your proxy settings in Telegram.

            Telegram now works through the Nym mixnet and has increased privacy!

            

            This allows you to connect from regions where Telegram is blocked.

            Note. If you are inactive on Telegram for a while, you may lose your connection and your messages may not get through the SOCKS5 proxy. If this happens, reconnect NymConnect and reset the proxy again.

            What is Nym?

            Even when content is encrypted, metadata and interaction patterns reveal sensitive information about people and systems. Nym protects Internet traffic by routing it through the decentralized mixnet network, which can be accessed anonymously with zk-nyms.
