Background

With the rising success of AI tools such as ChatGPT and Bing AI, Google has been looking to expand into the rapidly evolving AI market. Google has recently launched itself into the AI market with recent developments on their new AI, Gemini AI.

Comparison between GPT-4 and Gemini

Though Gemini is heavily under development, DeepMind, a Google subsidiary, has released the results of different benchmarks that compare GPT-4, the underlying AI for ChatGPT, and Gemini AI. The evaluated benchmarks include MMLU (general testing), Big-Bench Hard (reasoning), HellaSwag (reasoning), GSM8K (math), HumanEval (coding), MMMU (image processing), VATEX (video processing), and CoVoST 2 (audio processing).

Looking at the different sections, Gemini AI outperforms GPT-4 in Reasoning with 2/3 benchmarks and Math with 2/2 benchmarks. It dominates GPT-4 in coding with 2/2 benchmarks, one of which with a 10% higher score. It also beats GPT-4V in image processing, video processing, and audio processing in all 10 benchmarks! From this, we can see that Gemini outperforms GPT-4. Therefore, it means it is better than ChatGPT, Bard, and Bing AI as all of those run on GPT-4!

The Future of Gemini

Gemini Pro

With rapid developments of Gemini, DeepMind has plans to expand the capabilities of Gemini in the future. As of December 2023, the latest release of Gemini is Gemini Pro, which aims to provide free access to developers and enterprises. It has support for text-based prompts as well as multimodal inputs like tests, images, and other inputs. Gemini Pro also plans to incorporate features such as planning and memory features while improving consistency in the information it provides using methods such as retrieval methods to obtain chunks of information instead of word-for-word generation. With increasing capabilities, it is expected that Gemini Pro will dominate other popular language models, such as the OpenAI-provided ChatGPT, and the Microsoft-produced Bing AI.

Gemini Ultra

Alongside Gemini Pro, Google also plans to release Gemini Ultra, which will be similar to the currently existing Gemini Pro but will have better capabilities and be able to do much more complicated tasks. As of now, Gemini Ultra plans to release early next year.

Gemini Nano

Additionally, DeepMind plans to create Gemini Nano. Which will hopefully retain most of the features of Gemini Pro but fit in a much smaller footprint. This will allow Gemini, a very powerful model, to run on mobile/lower-powered devices such as mobile phones or lower-level hardware.

Conclusion

With the expanding capabilities of Gemini AI, it is clear that it is a game changer in the rapidly evolving field of Artificial Intelligence. A wide array of benchmarks demonstrate that Gemini AI has superior capabilities in various fields such as mathematics, coding, image, and video processing than its competitors. Additionally, Gemini is split into three different levels, Gemini Nano for lower-end devices, Pro for general tasks, and Ultra for highly complex tasks. Each is optimized to different performance levels, showing that Gemini will have a high versatility in a wide variety of applications!
