How It Started: A Journey into Community Volunteering and Leadership

Embarking on my tech journey, I delved into a world of possibilities and acquired the essential skills. It was during this exploration that I uncovered the profound impact of community volunteering, guided by the wisdom of my mentor. Initially, it began as a brief, two-day commitment—a volunteering event rather than a full-time community engagement. However, the experience ignited a fervent desire within me to delve deeper into the realm of community service.

Conversations with my mentor about community involvement opened my eyes to the positive change one could bring to a community. This realization fueled my curiosity, leading me to conduct extensive research on communities offering long-term engagement opportunities. Eventually, I found a home in She Code Africa, where I engaged with fellow members, particularly on the front-end track, fostering connections and expanding my horizons.

As my passion for community service continued to blossom, I sought opportunities to extend my impact beyond the tech sector and in my university. Connecting with various individuals, including those in the tech community, I serendipitously discovered the Google Developers Student Club (GDSC). Eager to be part of this dynamic group, I inquired about membership, actively participated, and soon felt a compelling need to contribute more significantly.

With the commencement of the next GDSC tenure, I seized the chance to become an integral part of the core team. My application was successful, and as a core team member, I dedicated myself to making a meaningful impact within the community. The desire to contribute even more led me to express my interest in leadership to my mentor, who encouraged my aspiration to become the next community leader. Guided by the then GDSC lead, I navigated the application process, underwent an interview, and ecstatically secured the position as the new lead.

The journey unfolded, and as I found myself navigating the realms of joy and responsibility, managing applications and coordinating events became my newfound role within the community.
