What is behind the Fedora Revolution? Let's define open source before we get started on this subject.
Open source: what is it?
Something that is available to the general public is called open source. This refers to a license that allows users to freely use, examine, modify, and distribute software. Making contributions to open source is worthwhile and may eventually pay off.
Here's more information on how to contribute to open source for the first time.
Fedora Linux
Fedora is a popular open-source Linux operating system. It is free software, and anyone can inspect, modify, and enhance its source code. It is renowned for being built on cutting-edge technology, integrating the newest features and software while preserving stability.
The Fedora Project
This is a vibrant community where people collaborate together to build the Fedora Linux operating system. To me, this is the heart of Fedora. This project solves problems and makes it easy for everyone to contribute to the development of the operating system.
It is a place where you can find support and share your experiences with others in the community. These four foundations guide the Fedora Project. They represent the core values and principles. These are:
Freedom - Fedora is a free software. This ensures that Fedora releases are predictable, legally redistributable, and innovative.
Friends - The Fedora community consists of various people and skills from all over the world who are dedicated to Fedora's core values. They build a strong and caring environment where everyone's opinion matters, and they work together to build Fedora and make it free for everyone.
Features - In Fedora, excellence is the watchword. The community contributes to the technical features that make Linux powerful, flexible, usable, and generally awesome software. The community is open-minded and constantly seeks to improve Fedora solutions.
First - Fedora strives to deliver the newest innovative features. The Fedora Project prioritizes freedom, care for the community, and making friends during contributions to the project.
The Fedora project develops and maintains Fedora Linux. In other words, the community owns Fedora, but it is sponsored by Red Hat.
Fedora Editions?
There are five major editions tailored for specific use cases. The fedora project website contains much more detailed explanations and procedures for using them.
Fedora Workstation: focuses on desktop and laptop computers. It is easy to use for all users and even programmers who want a Linux operating system experience. The latest version as of today is the Fedora Workstation 39.
Fedora Cloud: It is a powerful and minimal base operating system image. It’s built for scalable infrastructure.
Fedora Server: It is a powerful operating system for organizational infrastructure and it is suitable for system administrators. It includes the best and latest data center technologies.
Fedora IOT: This provides a trusted open source platform as a strong foundation for IoT (Internet of Things) ecosystems. The Fedora IoT was created by a team in the Fedora community called the IoT Working Group.
Fedora CoreOS: is a minimal, container-focused operating system. It runs workloads securely and at scale.
How can you contribute to Fedora?
Let us get right to this post's main course.
You can contribute to open source in a number of different ways. Do you enjoy writing, coding, testing, designing, or even helping people find their way in a community? Yes, indeed! Everyone can participate and have fun, since there is ample space for everyone. Visit the Fedora magazine blog to find out more about contributing.
There are also 2 major steps you need to take, regardless of how you intend to contribute to the Fedora Project.
Register for an account in the Fedora Account System(FAS)
Join Fedora's collaboration tools using your FAS account. These are: Fedora Discussion and the Fedora Chat. This is where the Fedora community hangs out and collaborates with great minds in the Fedora Project. If you’re a newbie to open source or Fedora, these channels should be at your fingertips. Here, you can get first-hand information to help you get started.
Advice to prospective Outreachy applicants
All Outreachy prospective applicants are encouraged to stay open minded, ask questions, and spend time with the Fedora community. Remember, there is no Fedora project without the community.
Learn more about Fedora via their social media channels, YouTube, website, and community blog and fedora magazine. Initially, I didn't know where to begin, but the Youtube videos I watched by the Fedora Project leader guided me to have an overall understanding of Fedora, their products, and the guiding principles. The blog sites are also very helpful. People have taken the time to give information about events and topics in the Fedora project that can help you get started.
What do I find most interesting about Fedora?
You would have guessed from the way I emphasized some words. It's the community, massive support, and online resources. I love the details in the information in Fedora's articles. I also love the fact that, though Fedora is an innovative community, they always put their guiding principles first.
What do I find confusing about Fedora?
We have been discussing Fedora as an open-source operating system that also an upstream of Red Hat.Doesn't it contradict Fedora's "Freedom "values? i.e., being a free software?
Summary
If you want to stay on the cutting edge of the latest innovations, you love an active and caring community, and you consider security and reliability a priority in software, then Fedora Linux is a great choice. Join the Fedora Way, Join the Fedora Project.
