The Two Towers of Learning
The term Universities have a familiar and confident ring to it, whereas terms like Polytechnic Universities can be confusing. Probably because, these two towers come from different perspectives.
To grasp the distinctions and parallels between TVET and traditional academic education, it's important to consider their core features. TVET focuses on practical skills and direct job readiness, emphasizing hands-on training and competency-based assessments.
In contrast, traditional academia prioritizes broad theoretical knowledge, with a curriculum rooted in research and analysis, preparing students for a wide range of careers often requiring advanced degrees. Each system has its unique teaching methods, assessment styles, and career pathways tailored to meet different educational and occupational needs.
As far as look and feel is concerned, there used to be a large difference between these two towers. The Universities used to be much more “pleasant” to the eye, however the environment has blurred somewhat, both these towers seems to have converged to a degree. However, their core business still differs predominantly, but both may now lead to a post graduate qualification.
