What are User Personas?

A user persona is a composite profile based on research and data about a group of users related to your problem. It is constructed using both quantitative and qualitative data from real users, providing a comprehensive picture of the user’s background, demographics, preferences, attitudes, activities, frustrations, motivations, and pain points.

User personas offer valuable context about the users, helping to keep them at the center of the product development process. They prevent teams from relying on personal feelings or assumptions about users, ensuring that decisions are made based on actual user needs and behaviors.

By leveraging personas, Agile teams can better understand and empathize with their users, leading to more informed decisions and ultimately more successful products. Personas are essential tools for maintaining a user-centered approach and designing solutions that meet users’ needs effectively.

Proto-Persona

A proto-persona is a preliminary version of a persona, created with limited information about the target user group. It serves as an initial hypothesis that is refined over time as more user data is collected, enhancing the understanding of who the users are.

Common Types of Personas

  1. Users: Individuals who interact with your product regularly.

  2. Technical and Financial Decision Makers: Those who make purchasing decisions but do not use the product.

  3. Influencers: Individuals who influence others to choose your product over competitors.

For B2B products, it is beneficial to create personas for both users and buyers. Additionally, consider creating personas for technical decision-makers, such as CTOs or engineers, if your product involves complex technical components. Typically, in B2B contexts, users are not the ones making purchase decisions.
