HNG Website: A Look Under the Hood ๐ต๏ธโโ๏ธ
I am excited to start my QA internship with HNG, and my first task was to review the HNG website. Here are my insights, and suggestions to make the user experience better!
Enhancing Navigation and Functionality ๐
My tests revealed a couple of areas for improvement in navigation. First, there's limited "back button" functionality after using certain homepage buttons. This means users would have to rely on the navigation bar at the top of the page, which might not be the most intuitive approach. Additionally, a broken link was found, leading to a 500 error instead of the intended "Docker and Kubernetes for Developers" course.
Optimizing Visual Design ๐ฆ
While the website's design is visually appealing, there were minor hiccups. The cute animated overlay over the hero image partially covered some text, making it hard to read. Also, the footer text appeared misaligned on both desktop and mobile versions of the Brave browser. And lastly, the hero image itself wasn't visible on mobile devices.
Ensuring Consistent Performance ๐ป
Performance-wise, the website loaded a bit slower on the Brave browser compared to the other browsers. There was also a missing image from the review carousel on the homepage.
Suggestions for Enhancing the HNG Website ๐
By tackling the issues below, the website can become more user-friendly and efficient. Here are some suggestions for further improvement:
Usability Testing: Engaging real users in usability tests would provide valuable insights into how intuitive the site is and how easily visitors can find what they need.
Cross-Device Testing: Testing on a wider range of devices, including various tablets and smartphones, would ensure a seamless experience across different platforms.
Accessibility Testing: Ensuring the website can be navigated using only the keyboard and screen readers would make it more inclusive for visually impaired users.
Performance Testing: Evaluating the website's performance under heavy traffic can help identify areas for improvement and ensure smooth operation during peak times.
Comprehensive Consistency Testing: Ensuring a consistent design and content style across all pages (like fonts, colors, and button styles) would create a polished user experience.
Test on More Browsers: Including Safari in the browser tests, would ensure a smooth experience for a wider range of visitors.
Conclusion
The HNG website has a solid foundation, but addressing these issues can significantly improve the user experience. Implementing these suggestions will help create a more seamless and enjoyable browsing experience.
