Introduction to Linux Commands and Shell Scripting

  1. Unix is a family of operating systems

  2. One of the popular Unix based OS is Apple MacOS

  3. Linux is a family of Unix like OS

  4. Linux is free and open source

  5. 1991, Linus Torvalds developed a free open source version of the Unix kernel called Linux.

Linux Distributions:

  1. Linux Distributions is a specific flavour of Linux OS commonly called as a Linux Distro

  2. All distros must use Linux Kernel which is the core component of Linux OS

  3. Debian

    1. Largest community distro

    2. Supports many computer architecture

  4. Ubuntu

    1. is Debian based

    2. Developed & managed by Canonical

    3. 3 editions are available

      1. Ubunty Desktop (PCs)

      2. Ubuntu Server (simple file servers & multinode cloud)

      3. Ubuntu Core (Internet of things)

  5. Redhat Linux

    1. A core linux distro

    2. Managed by Red Hat

  6. Fedora
