Automating User Account Creation with Bash
Introduction
The inevitable task of a SysOps engineer in an organization is creating user accounts and groups. For a small organization, this can be easy to perform manually. For large organizations however, this can prove to be a daunting task. More so, it would be error prone. This challenge can be taken off by automating the process using bash scripts.
This article gives a step-by-step guide on how to automate the process of user and group creation using Bash script.
Prerequisite
Basic understanding of Linux commands
Linux environment to run script
Create a text file containing users and groups
Defining Variables
The needed variables are defined
Checking For Root Privileges
This is an administrative task, so the command verifies if the user has root privileges.
Checking for the Input File
The script verifies if an input file has been provided
Creating Directories and Files
Here, the required directories are created
Creating Functions
Two Functions are used
To generate password
To log messages
Processing the Input File
Conclusion
Performing everyday tasks in the work environment can be very tiring if done entirely manually. Automating tasks using scripts like this one makes work faster, easier and a lot more fun.
