McLaughlin-Levrone Breaks World Record to Win Hurdles Gold
American athlete Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone delivered a record-breaking performance in the 400m hurdles, clinching gold at the Paris Olympics. She shattered her own world record with a time of 50.37 seconds, outpacing her rivals and defending her title with ease.
The highly anticipated showdown with Dutch runner Femke Bol fell short as McLaughlin-Levrone left her competitors far behind. Bol, who is the second-fastest in history for the event, finished third with a time of 52.15 seconds. US athlete Anna Cockrell took silver with a personal best of 51.87 seconds.
McLaughlin-Levrone, who had previously set a world record of 50.65 seconds in June, saved her best performance for the Olympics, marking her sixth global title. Along with Bol, McLaughlin-Levrone has now recorded 17 of the 20 fastest times in the history of the 400m hurdles.
Despite Bol's impressive season, including an indoor 400m flat world record and a new European 400m hurdles record of 50.95 seconds, she could not match McLaughlin-Levrone's dominance in this race. Bol had earlier helped the Netherlands secure gold in the mixed 4x400m relay with a thrilling finish.
McLaughlin-Levrone, celebrating her 25th birthday on Wednesday, expressed her excitement about the growth of the sport. "It's amazing to see our sport continue to grow," she said. "Just a lot of hard work put in this year. I knew it was going to be a tough race."
In other Olympic news, Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan made history by winning the country's first athletics gold with a javelin throw of 92.97m. American Grant Holloway secured gold in the men’s 110m hurdles, while Tara Davis-Woodhall won the women’s long jump for the USA.
