A lot of people stop using apps/ websites quickly because of their interface. If they find it tiring to look at or visually unappealing, they are less likely to stick around. Ui design focuses on the visuals of a website/application. They are concerned with making a website or application appealing to the users. While Ux designers focus on functionality, Ui designers focus on elegance.

So, how do you become one, effectively?

  1. Learn the software:

Learning theory off the bat can make the learning process unbearable. Focus on getting accustomed to the tools first. Play around with replicating existing designs in Figma, Adobe XD, etc. Soon enough, you'll be able to notice a pattern in good designs you replicate. Some great designs to replicate are Instagram, Pinterest and Banking apps.

Once you can effectively replicate good designs, you can move on to the next step.

  2. Refine your skills

Now the tools are under your belt, and you have an idea of how good designs look, you can proceed to watch tutorials/ take courses. You can't learn everything you need just by designing, though it helps. You still need to take a course/ watch tutorials to refine your skills and knowledge. (Learn key design principles in this stage.)

  3. Work on projects and build your portfolio

So you've learned the design tools and have the necessary knowledge, it's time to work on projects. Companies don't hire fresh designers with no work. Work on dummy projects to build your portfolio or work with hackathon teams on real-life projects. Having projects to add to your portfolio gives employers an idea of your skills and niche.

  4. Apply to jobs

Once you have a solid portfolio, you can apply for jobs with your portfolio!

I am a software engineering student from Nigeria. I'm getting into UI/UX and learning loads of stuff. I believe the best way to truly know something is to break it down to the simplest explanation. That's why I'm here! I am going to share my understanding as well as my learnings with you all! The tech field isn't static so new things are bound to emerge. Regardless, my goal is to share it with you all.
