Gateway in Networking

*A Gateway is a network node that connects two networks using different protocols together.

*It acts as a gate between two networks. It may be a router, firewall, server, or other device that enables traffic to flow in and out of the network.

USE OF GATEWAY DEVICE IN A NETWORK:

*Router can communicate between two different network using the same protocol on other hand A gateway is a network node that connects two networks using different protocols together.

*Gateway is also called protocol converter.

*Gateways perform routing and forwarding functions, determining the best path for data to reach its destination.

*Gateways can provide security features such as firewalls, which filter traffic to and from a network, preventing unauthorized access and attacks.

*Gateways are often used to convert protocols. For example, a gateway can convert data from a local protocol used within a private network to a protocol used on the internet.

TYPES OF GATEWAYS:

1.Default Gateway: Typically a router connects a local network to the internet. The default gateway is where data goes when the destination is outside the local network.

2.Proxy Gateway: It acts as an intermediary for requests from clients seeking resources from servers. It provides firewall security and can cache frequently accessed content.

3.VoIP Gateway: It converts voice calls between public switched telephone networks(PSTN) and the digital packets used by VoIP networks.

4.Email Gateway: It Manages and directs email traffic, often providing services such as filtering or virus scanning.
