How I Managed Taking Interactive Study Sessions During Lockdown

The COVID-19 pandemic brought many challenges, especially for teachers like me who had to shift from in-person classes to online teaching almost overnight. As a teacher, keeping students engaged and interactive in a virtual setting was no easy task. In this blog, I will share my experiences and the strategies I used to conduct interactive study sessions during the lockdown.

Understanding the Challenges of Remote Teaching At the start, transitioning to online teaching was quite overwhelming. The lack of face-to-face interaction made it difficult to engage students effectively. Many students struggled to adapt to the new online learning environment, and technical issues, like poor internet connections, added to the confusion. There was also a learning curve for both teachers and students when it came to using new technology. I realized early on that to succeed in this new setting, I had to address these challenges head-on.

Choosing the Right Online Platform and Tools

The first step was choosing the right platform to conduct my online classes. I experimented with various options, such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet, before settling on one that was user-friendly and suited our needs. Once I had the platform in place, I explored different tools that could make my sessions more interactive. Features like digital whiteboards, screen sharing, and breakout rooms were essential in keeping students engaged. Choosing tools that were easy to use for both students and me was crucial to ensure smooth learning.

Incorporating Interactive Elements

To make my lessons more interactive, I started including quizzes, wheel of names tools which help me pick random winners during my online sessions, polls, and live Q&A sessions. These activities helped to break the monotony of online classes and encouraged students to participate actively. I also began using educational apps like Kahoot and Quizlet, which made learning fun and engaging. Integrating multimedia content like videos and interactive presentations also played a big role in capturing the students' attention and making the sessions more dynamic.

Encouraging Student Participation and Collaboration

Getting students to participate in an online setting can be challenging, especially when some are shy or hesitant to speak up. To foster a collaborative environment, I started assigning group projects and encouraging peer discussions. I also made it a point to reach out to quieter students and encourage them to share their thoughts. Keeping students motivated was another challenge, so I often used positive reinforcement and praise to keep them engaged.

Managing Classroom Dynamics Online

Managing a virtual classroom is different from managing a physical one. I quickly realized the need for setting clear rules and expectations for online behavior. I established guidelines for muting microphones when not speaking, raising virtual hands to ask questions, and being respectful during discussions. To maintain discipline, I found that keeping a watchful eye on the participants' list and using breakout rooms to manage smaller groups worked well. Ensuring every student had a chance to speak and participate was essential in creating an inclusive environment.

Adapting Teaching Methods for Remote Learning

Teaching online required me to adapt my usual methods to fit the new format. Flexibility became key; I had to be open to trying new approaches and adjusting my strategies as needed. I adopted a flipped classroom model, where students would study the material beforehand, and we would use class time for discussions and problem-solving. This approach helped make the sessions more interactive and allowed for more in-depth exploration of topics.

Building a Supportive Learning Environment

Creating a supportive learning environment was vital, especially during such uncertain times. I made it a point to foster a sense of community among the students, despite the physical distance. Regular check-ins and informal chats helped in understanding the diverse home situations of my students. I also offered emotional support and encouraged students to share their concerns. Providing regular feedback and maintaining open lines of communication with both students and parents helped build trust and support.

Overcoming Technical Issues and Improving Accessibility

Technical glitches were inevitable, but I learned to handle them with patience and preparedness. Having backup plans, like recorded lessons and alternative communication channels, ensured that learning continued despite any disruptions. It was also important to consider accessibility, ensuring that all students, regardless of their resources, could participate fully. I made efforts to provide materials in multiple formats and offered flexible deadlines to accommodate those with limited internet access.

Reflecting on the Experience and Lessons Learned

Looking back, I realize that the shift to online teaching was not just a challenge but also an opportunity for growth. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me develop new skills and adapt my teaching style. While there were many hurdles, the experience taught me the importance of flexibility, creativity, and patience. The interactive sessions helped keep the students engaged and made the learning experience more enjoyable for everyone.
