How to write user friendly URLs for SEO better ranking.
A friendly URL accurately describes the page using keywords that are easy to read for both search engines and users.
Less Depth is Better.
Your URL should clearly convey the page's content. Use words that describe the content or topic.
Example:
yourwebsite.com/best-coffee-makers
is better thanyourwebsite.com/page1234
Use keywords in the URL(don't do stuffing).
Include relevant keywords that match the page's content, but avoid keyword stuffing.
Example:
yourwebsite.com/learn-digital-marketing
if the page is about digital marketing tips.
Use hyphens (-) to Distinguish words not Score (_). It does not interprets (_).
Hyphens improve readability for both users and search engines.
Example:
yourwebsite.com/seo-tips
instead ofyourwebsite.com/seotips
.
Use Lowercase in the urls.
Lowercase URLs are easier to read, type, and remember. This improves usability and reduces the likelihood of errors when users manually enter URLs.
Search engines prefer uniformity. Lowercase URLs reduce the risk of indexing multiple variations of the same URL, which could dilute link equity and harm SEO rankings. Consistent lowercase URLs also appear more professional and are more likely to be shared as backlinks.
No Special Characters (&&)
Use lowercase letters and avoid special characters like
&
,%
,?
, which can complicate the URL structure.Example:
yourwebsite.com/product-reviews
instead ofyourwebsite.com/Product%20Reviews
?
.
Ignore Numeric Labels
Avoid using numeric labels like page IDs or session numbers in URLs. These can make URLs less meaningful and harder to remember.
Example: Instead of
yourwebsite.com/product/12345
, useyourwebsite.com/product/eco-friendly-water-bottle
.
URL's helps in User experience as well as backlinking
Backlinks from reputable websites signal to search engines that your content is valuable and trustworthy. This boosts your site’s domain authority, which can lead to higher rankings in search engine results pages (SERPs).
Search engines use backlinks to discover new content. When your site is linked by others, search engine crawlers are more likely to find and index your pages, improving your visibility in search results.
Limit Folders and Subdirectories:
Avoid deep nesting of folders or subdirectories, as this can make URLs long and confusing.
Example:
yourwebsite.com/blog/seo-tips
instead ofyourwebsite.com/content/blog/2023/seo/tips
.
