The Best Piece of Advice I Received When Starting to Learn 3D Art
Table of contents
When I was 17 years old, Blender 2.74 was released. It was also the year that my parents bought me my first laptop — which I used to learn 3D to make my dreams more than just thoughts.
I was just starting to get interested in animation and had been running myself ragged trying to achieve my first short film. But, like most beginners, I was making a lot of mistakes: I tried to render at 1080p@60fps, tried to learn absolutely everything at the same time, and didn’t start with small and simple things to learn the fundamentals.
Until one day, a random person on Reddit said to me:
Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.
That day, my whole life changed.
I started trying everything in small chunks, 20 minutes a day, just to discover which 3D area was for me. This approach helped me to learn a lot. First, I started with 3D modeling and did some basic figures, objects, and simple buildings. Next, I did a little bit of texturing with basic colors and textures, followed up by lighting (my favorite) and VFX (the most difficult), and finished with composition.
Since 2015, I’ve been giving up and then coming back in a never-ending cycle of pain, joy, and self-discovery. Now, in 2024, I’ve started once again learning 3D, one field at a time, because I realize that nothing can stop me from learning another field and ending with absolute mastery in one or three fields and a decent level at the rest.
You can learn and make your dreams come true — you just need to be consistent and have a vision, a goal.
