How to start Game Development as a total beginner without starving to death
Table of contents
Most successful people share a handful of things in common:
They are disciplined with their time.
They know how to stay focused on one goal at a time.
They have mentors and other influential people they can turn to for advice.
They have mastered one (or multiple) valuable skills.
But in the game development industry, especially as an indie developer, I have noticed that the most successful devs share this one habit:
They analyze and don’t rush.
And here’s why:
Most amateur indies can’t even decide, at the beginning, which game engine to use because they want the absolute best, often talking trash or looking down on other devs who use different engines.
Unreal Engine 5: Excels in creating high-quality graphics and is often used for first-person shooters, open-world RPGs, and high-end action-adventure games.
Unity: Versatile and works well for both 2D and 3D games. It is mainly used for platformers, puzzle games, mobile games, and mid-range 3D games.
Godot: Popular among indie developers and well-suited for 2D games due to its specialized 2D engine. It’s great for 2D platformers, roguelikes, and pixel art games.
Mentors:
Brackeys (THE GOAT): One of the best mentors for learning 2D game development and Godot.
Code Monkey: An excellent mentor for those who want to learn 2D/3D game development and Unity.
Gamedev.tv: A group of professional game developers that will teach you everything you need to start as a game dev, including UE5!
Resources:
Many new devs and experienced indies often forget that there are free and paid resources available, such as assets, systems, and tools in both the Unity and UE5 stores, as well as websites with a lot of free assets like animations and sprites.
Learning game development is an amazing journey, and with preparation, it can be even better.
