Linear algebra is the study of vectors, matrices, and linear transformations, and it is crucial to many fields like computer graphics, data science, and engineering. In this guide, we’ll thoroughly explore the foundational concepts to give you a solid understanding of how linear algebra works, focusing on the most essential operations and properties.
Fields
A field is a mathematical structure where you can perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These operations follow specific rules like commutativity ((a + b = b + a) and (a \cdot b = b \cdot a)), associativity, and distributivity. Real numbers (( \mathbb{R} )) and complex numbers (( \mathbb{C} )) are common examples of fields. Every element in a field has an additive inverse and a multiplicative inverse (except zero for multiplication). Fields provide the foundation for many operations in linear algebra because matrices are made up of numbers from a field.
Systems of Linear Equations
A system of linear equations consists of multiple equations that need to be solved together. For instance:
2x + 3y = 6
4x - y = 5
This system has two variables, (x) and (y), and the goal is to find the values that satisfy both equations. A system of linear equations can be represented in matrix form as (AX = B), where (A) is the coefficient matrix, (X) is the variable matrix, and (B) is the constants matrix.
Theorem: Existence and Uniqueness of Solutions
The number of solutions to a system of linear equations depends on the rank of matrix (A):
If (A) has full rank (the rank equals the number of unknowns), the system has a unique solution.
If the rank is less than the number of unknowns, the system either has no solution or infinitely many solutions.
Matrix Operations
Addition and Scalar Multiplication: These operations are performed element-wise. If two matrices (A) and (B) are the same size, they can be added by adding their corresponding elements. Scalar multiplication involves multiplying every element of a matrix by a constant.
Matrix Multiplication: When multiplying two matrices (A) (size (m \times n)) and (B) (size (n \times p)), the resulting matrix (C) (size (m \times p)) has elements calculated by taking the dot product of rows from (A) with columns from (B). Specifically, each element of (C) is computed as:

Elementary Row Operations (ERO)
Elementary row operations are transformations applied to matrices to simplify them. There are three types:
Row swapping: Interchanging two rows.
Row scaling: Multiplying a row by a non-zero scalar.
Row addition: Replacing a row with the sum of itself and a multiple of another row.
These operations are useful for transforming a matrix into row-reduced echelon form.
Row Equivalence
Two matrices are called row-equivalent if one can be transformed into the other through a series of elementary row operations. This concept is fundamental because row-equivalent matrices represent the same system of equations.
Theorem: Row-Equivalent Systems Have the Same Solutions
If two matrices are row-equivalent, their corresponding systems of equations have exactly the same solutions.
Row-Reduced Echelon Form (RREF)
A matrix is in row-reduced echelon form (RREF) if:
The leading entry in each row is 1 (called a leading 1).
Each leading 1 is the only non-zero entry in its column.
The leading 1 in each row appears to the right of the leading 1 in the row above it.
Any rows containing only zeros are at the bottom.
An example of a matrix in RREF:
[ \begin{bmatrix} 1 & 0 & 2 \ 0 & 1 & -3 \ 0 & 0 & 0 \end{bmatrix} ]
Theorem: Existence of Row-Reduced Echelon Form
Every matrix is row-equivalent to a unique row-reduced echelon form. This makes RREF a powerful tool for solving systems of linear equations.
Solving Systems with Matrices
The process of solving a system of equations using matrices involves representing the system as (AX = B), where (A) is the matrix of coefficients, (X) is the matrix of variables, and (B) is the constants matrix. Using row operations, (A) can be transformed into RREF, allowing for direct extraction of the solutions.
Theorem: Inconsistent Systems
A system of linear equations is inconsistent (has no solution) if, after row-reduction, a row of the form ([0 0 0 | b]) appears, where (b is not equals to 0). This row indicates a contradiction like (0 = b), which cannot be true.
Inverse of a Matrix
A matrix (A) is invertible if there exists a matrix (A^{-1}) such that:
[ A \cdot A^{-1} = A^{-1} \cdot A = I ]
where (I) is the identity matrix. The identity matrix acts like the number 1 in matrix operations: multiplying any matrix by (I) leaves the matrix unchanged.
Theorem: Inverse of a 2x2 Matrix
The inverse of a 2x2 matrix exists if and only if the determinant of (A) is non-zero.
The inverse is given by:
[ A^{-1} = \frac{1}{ad - bc} \begin{bmatrix} d & -b \ -c & a \end{bmatrix} ]
Solving Systems Using Inverses
If (A) is an invertible matrix, you can solve the system (AX = B) by multiplying both sides by (A^{-1}):
[ X = A^{-1}B ]
This approach only works if (A) is invertible, which means it must have full rank.
Theorem: Existence of Matrix Inverses
A square matrix (A) is invertible if and only if its determinant is non-zero. In other words, an invertible matrix must have full rank, meaning all its rows (or columns) are linearly independent.
Determinants
The determinant of a matrix is a scalar value that reflects certain properties of the matrix. For a 2x2 matrix, the determinant is given by:
[ \text{det}(A) = ad - bc ]
For larger matrices, the determinant is calculated recursively using minors and cofactors. The determinant is important because:
If (\text{det}(A) = 0), the matrix is not invertible (singular).
If (\text{det}(A) \neq 0), the matrix is invertible.
Theorem: Determinant and Row Operations
Swapping two rows of a matrix changes the sign of its determinant.
Multiplying a row by a scalar multiplies the determinant by that scalar.
Adding a multiple of one row to another row does not change the determinant.
Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors
Eigenvalues and eigenvectors are important concepts related to matrices. For a square matrix (A), if there exists a scalar (\lambda) and a non-zero vector (v) such that:
[ A v = \lambda v ]
then (\lambda) is called an eigenvalue, and (v) is the corresponding eigenvector. Eigenvalues give insight into the properties of transformations represented by matrices.
Theorem: Characteristic Equation
The eigenvalues of a matrix (A) are the solutions to the characteristic equation:
[ \text{det}(A - \lambda I) = 0 ]
This equation helps to find the eigenvalues of the matrix, which are important in applications like stability analysis and quantum mechanics.
