Gaining Perspective in Your Web Development Journey
The challenges you're facing while learning web development right now are just small moments in the grand scheme of life. Soon, you'll look back and feel proud of how far you've come. This feeling is absolutely valid & many people encounter similar challenges when learning programming. Changing your perspective means trying to view your journey from a different angle & finding ways to make your learning process more effective rather than overthinking it.
Today I'm sharing some practical steps to improve your studies and perspective—steps that I learned as a beginner:
1. Appreciate Small Wins
You might be thinking that you haven’t created a project yet or haven’t fully grasped the concepts. But consider that you have already covered the basics of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Recognize every small win, such as:
Creating a simple web page.
Understanding basic JavaScript logic.
Enhancing design with CSS.
Value these small achievements. They will give you confidence.
2. Focus on Hands-On Projects
Coding concepts become clear only when you apply them in the real world. You might have studied concepts in theory, but now it’s time to practice. Start with small projects:
Basic Projects: Create a personal portfolio website with a simple design and your info.
Mini Challenges: You can tackle small daily challenges like form validation, calculator apps, to-do lists, etc.
Project-based learning will help you implement concepts in real life and improve your understanding.
3. Try to Teach the Concept
If you have doubts about a topic, try explaining it to someone, even if they are a beginner. Helping friends or people in online forums can boost your confidence. Explaining something helps clarify your own doubts.
4. Join Code Reviews and Communities
You can join online communities such as:
GitHub: Share your projects and contribute to others’ projects.
Stack Overflow/Reddit: Post your questions and strengthen your knowledge by answering others’ questions.
FreeCodeCamp/CodePen: These platforms allow others to review your code and provide feedback.
Getting feedback and reviewing code from others can take your coding skills to the next level.
5. Learn by Doing, Not Just Reading
Coding is a practical skill, and writing code is more important than just reading theory. If you struggle with a concept, open the browser console and experiment directly. The more code you write, the better you'll understand.
6. Adopt a Long-Term View
It might seem like you’re not making progress on projects now, but this is a natural part of the learning process. Everyone struggles at first. Learning a programming language takes time, and applying that knowledge in real-life projects is a slow process. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself; just make a bit of progress every day.
7. Take Breaks
Sometimes we feel overwhelmed and think we’re not progressing. In such cases, taking a break can be beneficial. Coming back with a fresh mind will help you understand concepts better.
If you understand that every small step is moving you forward, your learning journey will be more enjoyable and stress-free. You already have a foundation; now you just need practical implementation and patience.
Stay tuned and happy coding! :)
