Oracle Cloud World 2024 & SQLcl Projects sneak peek

Intro

Oracle Cloud World was held in Las Vegas from September 9 to 12, 2024. It was my first such big conference with so many people—I've heard rumours about more than 20k participants.

Many people say that this conference is more for business users than developers. Maybe it's true, but the number of available sessions is so huge that I could pick interesting topics even as a developer.

Important announcements at Oracle Cloud World

Larry Ellison's announcements at CloudWorld 2024 bring exciting changes. Oracle is teaming up with Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and AWS, making multi-cloud the way forward.

The Autonomous Database now manages and secures itself, and the new 23ai database offers even stronger security features.

APEX updates speed up app development, while Oracle’s partners help grow its global reach.

Plus, built-in AI tools in the 23ai database make advanced analytics easier to use, all with a focus on stronger data security and a future without passwords.

My session regarding SQLcl Liquibase

What was the most exciting part of OCW? My opportunity to present together with Jeff Smith from Oracle. Our session, "Free Your Developers by Automating Database Schema Changes," showed how using SQLcl Liquibase helped one of Pretius customers to embrace CI/CD for their database. The session was only 20 minutes long, but there were many interesting questions afterwards.

SQLcl Projects sneak peek

I won't review all the sessions I attended. I want to focus on the new incoming feature "SQLcl Projects” presented by Martin D’Souza (possible release time -in the next 12 months)

DISCLAIMER: These are only my thoughts after OCW session and some screenshots captured from slides. This isn’t anything official and documented yet.

According to the demo shown by Martin, this new SQLcl feature will allow developers to:

1. Initialize GIT repo

2. Create a new project - it will create all files necessary to manage releases and deployments.

3. Export all DB objects and APEX apps

4. Handle the order of scripts automatically

5. Assign tickets.

6. Create changelogs and changesets automatically for each release.

7. Add custom scripts - write “insert(…)” or any other custom code, and SQLcl Projects will do all the necessary work.

8. Generate and test artifacts.

9. Deploy the artifact to the selected environment.

10. Create release.

What’s in Vegas stays in Vegas

I couldn’t help but mention all the fun parts of being in Vegas, making new friends and connections and attending parties and music concerts. I will upload some photos - I can’t write more :)
