Apple deploys iOS 18, but Apple Intelligence to debut next month

Apple on Monday announced the availability of iOS 18, but the company will introduce its much-awaited AI service Apple Intelligence next month.

The new update brings customization to the Home Screen and Control Center, a redesign to Photos, and enhancements to Messages and Mail, according to the company.

In messaging, when cellular and Wi-Fi connections are not available, Messages via satellite would connect users to a satellite from the Messages app to send and receive texts, emojis, and Tapbacks over iMessage and SMS.

Apple noted that the Phone app will allow users to record and transcribe live calls. Call participants would be notified before a recording starts and transcripts would be saved to the Notes app.

Later in the year, categorization in the Mail app will be available.

The iPhone maker said that Reader in the Safari browser has been redesigned by including a summary and a table of contents. In addition, with Distraction Control, users can hide items on a webpage, such as sign-in banners or content overlays within a website.

The company also introduced Passwords, a new app for users to access their passwords and credentials.

The iOS 18 would also allow users to lock or hide an app. When an app is locked or hidden, content like messages or emails inside the app would be hidden from search, notifications, and other places across the system.

The new software update also lets users share only specific contacts with an app, and developers can offer users a seamless and private experience when connecting third-party accessories with the iPhone, according to the company.

Artificial Intelligence: The tech giant will make the first set of its generative AI service Apple Intelligence available next month.

The company noted that with Writing Tools, users would be able to rewrite, proofread, and summarize text nearly everywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.

In Photos, the Memories feature would enable users to create movies by typing a description. In addition, natural language can be used to search for specific photos, and Search in videos will have the ability to find specific moments in clips. The new Clean Up tool would be able to identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo, according to Apple.

Apple added that Siri will become more natural and deeply integrated into the system.

Separately, later this fall, AirPods Pro 2 will add an over-the-counter hearing aid capability for users with mild to moderate hearing loss.

Hi community, I am a business journalist and have been writing news articles on technology and healthcare companies. I am taking a crack at independent blogging on this platform. Hope you all like it. P.S. The content is sourced (from press releases, regulatory filings etc.). However, if ever, I give an opinion, that would be my own, and not of a company or organization I am associated with. Thanks,
