Be on time with Announce the time

As someone who spends long hours working on a Mac every day, I love finding ways to make my laptop and me work more effectively together. Recently, I discovered a great trick that helps me be on time for remote meetings and, more importantly, end them on time: Announce the time.

Your Mac can tell you the time at intervals you choose. I use it hourly to help with meetings, but you can set it to announce the time every half hour or 15 minutes. The shorter intervals between announcements serve as a useful reminder to give your eyes a break from the screen and have a stretch.

How to activate the voice

  1. Open Settings > Control Centre and scroll to Menu Bar only section

    Alternatively use Spotlight search:

    1. CMD + spacebar

    2. Type Announce time and hit enter

  2. Click Clock Options…

  1. Turn on toggle for Announce the time

  2. Specify your preferred interval e.g. On the hour

  1. Select Customise Voice… and specify your preferred voice, rate and volume.

💡
Fun Fact: The voice "Novelty (Whisper)" is the same voice used in the intro of the anime Serial Experiments Lain.
