My Journey of Growth: Volunteering at Web3 Afrika Lagos

At the beginning of 2024, I set a personal goal: to improve my communication skills and become more comfortable with public speaking. It was something I had long struggled with, and I knew it was time to push myself. As luck would have it, I found a public speaking community on X (formerly Twitter) that played a significant role in helping me speak more confidently in public and connect meaningfully with others.

To my surprise, it wasn’t as hard as I’d thought. The key was simple—practice and intentionality. Over the next few months, I kept at it, and the results were almost magical. Slowly but surely, I began speaking on spaces without the usual anxiety and found myself communicating more effectively with others on both X and LinkedIn. It felt incredible to witness this transformation within myself. I was becoming a better version of myself, and I loved every moment of it.

What’s funny is that I had always been active in debates and news reading during my college days. But after college, I stopped, and somewhere along the way, I lost my confidence in speaking up. Now, that old spark was returning, and it felt amazing.

Fast forward to September 21, 2024, I decided to take another leap—I volunteered for the Web3 Afrika event in Lagos. To my delight, I was selected! I knew this would push me out of my comfort zone even more. Instead of just attending an event and sitting quietly, I’d be involved in the action. No hiding in the crowd this time; I’d be participating and engaging with others as a volunteer.

I was assigned to the registration point, where I checked in attendees. I was thrilled because this role gave me the opportunity to interact with many people I didn’t know, welcoming them with a smile. This, I believed, would help further boost my confidence—and it did!

Connecting with other volunteers was another highlight. We clicked instantly, and I made new friends and potential collaborators for future projects. I even ran into a few familiar faces among the attendees and took pictures with them. I also made new friends, turning what could have been a routine event into a memorable and exciting experience.

Volunteering at Web3 Afrika taught me so much. Just months ago, I could barely connect with others properly on X or LinkedIn, let alone in person. Now, not only can I communicate more confidently online, but I can also build relationships face-to-face.

This is massive growth for me, and I’m beyond excited! My journey has shown me that if you are intentional and consistent about improving yourself, you can achieve great things. I’m looking forward to more opportunities to connect with people, make meaningful relationships, and continue my public speaking journey.

Here’s to more growth, more connections, and stepping further out of my shell!
