How Airtel Uses AI to Tackle Spam Calls in India
Airtel's launch of an AI-powered spam detection system marks a significant step in combatting India's overwhelming spam call problem. Spam calls and fraudulent messages have become an everyday frustration for millions of Indian mobile users, and Airtel's innovative solution directly addresses this issue. Developed in-house, the AI system scans and evaluates 2.5 billion calls and 1.5 billion SMS messages every day, using 250 real-time parameters such as caller frequency, call duration, and geographical spread to flag potential spam. This advanced technology has proven effective, blocking 100 million spam calls and 3 million spam messages daily, making it a game-changer in protecting users from intrusive communications.
The dual-layer system operates at both the network and IT levels, providing a seamless and automatic layer of protection for Airtel's customers. It even alerts users to dangerous SMS links, cross-checking them with a centralized blacklist of malicious URLs. The AI's speed and efficiency are critical, as it processes and identifies spam in milliseconds without the need for customers to download additional software or take any action. Additionally, the system can detect suspicious patterns like frequent changes in devices, which are often linked to fraudulent behaviour.
This initiative places Airtel at the forefront of the battle against spam in India's telecom sector, addressing a long-standing issue that has plagued millions of consumers. It also represents a broader push by telecom companies to use AI to enhance customer safety and experience.
