The Google Developer Student Clubs (GDSC) transition to Google Developer Groups (GDG) On Campus is one of the most significant changes for the community, marking a new chapter for students and developers across the globe.

The primary purpose of the info session was to highlight this transition, focusing on expanding the community’s reach.

It aimed to offer students more learning opportunities, more connections with industry professionals, and provide them with resources to help them grow as developers.


What is GDG on Campus?

The Google Developer Groups (GDG) On Campus is an extension of the GDG community, designed specifically to cater to students within universities and colleges.

It provides a platform for students to engage in technical learning, develop new skills, and connect with like-minded peers and industry experts.

GDG On Campus aims to bridge the gap between academia and the tech industry by offering resources, mentorship, and real-world opportunities that empower students to thrive in their development journeys.

The initiative focuses on fostering a collaborative environment where students can share knowledge, work on projects, and grow into the next generation of technology leaders.


Event Overview

The GDG on Campus UoE 2024 Info Session was a virtual meetup organized to introduce students to the newly launched Google Developer Groups (GDG) On Campus initiative at the University of Eldoret.

The event, held in partnership with EldoHub, was a great success, bringing together students of various experience levels—ranging from beginners to seasoned developers.

During the session, attendees had the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, learn about the club’s activities, and explore how the collaboration with EldoHub offers even more growth opportunities.

Key topics included the benefits of joining GDG On Campus, upcoming learning sessions, and the additional resources and mentorship available through EldoHub.

The event was well-received by participants, who expressed excitement about the new initiative and its potential to provide them with practical skills and networking opportunities to grow as developers.

Core Team Introduction

The event began with the introduction of the Core Team (2024/2025) Leads, who each shared their background and vision for the upcoming year.

  1. Sheila Mahinda - GDG UoE Lead
    Sheila is the current lead for GDG UoE.

    With a strong background in Data Science and a deep passion for Front-End Development, she combines her technical expertise with a keen interest in fostering innovation within the developer community.

    Her leadership is driven by a commitment to empower students to grow their skills and take on real-world challenges.

  2. Preston Mayieka - Vice Lead
    Preston brings a wealth of experience in Web development, technical writing, and game development to the team.
    Currently, he contributes to one of the largest tech platforms, freeCodeCamp alongside Write The Docs Kenya, where his expertise shines.
    His versatility and passion for blending creativity with technology make him a vital part of the leadership, as he works to inspire the next generation of developers.

  3. Dancan Ng'ang'a - Technical Lead
    Dancan is a skilled developer with a strong technical acumen.We cannot talk about Python without mentioning him. 🐍

    As the Technical Lead, he plays a key role in guiding the technical direction of GDG UoE and ensuring that members have access to the latest technologies and tools to succeed in their projects.

  4. Elly Kurgat - Assistant Technical Lead
    Elly serves as the Assistant Technical Lead, supporting the team with his expertise in software development.
    His collaborative approach ensures the technical growth of members and the successful execution of various projects within the group.

  5. Enock Wanyama - Events Lead
    Enock oversees the planning and coordination of events at GDG UoE. He posesses strong Web Development skills.
    His organizational skills and ability to create impactful learning experiences ensure that GDG events are not only informative but also engaging and beneficial to all participants.


Partnership with EldoHub

EldoHub is a technology and innovation hub based in Eldoret, Kenya.

It is an education, innovation and technology company that supports youth and women between the age of 18 - 35 years.

The organization was started with the realization that there was great potential and underlying talent among the youth in Kenya that was unutilized or underutilized.

EldoHub understood that the problem of the youth is not just employment, but also lack of relevant skills needed for job creation, as demanded in the labour market.
