My journey to independence in fitness
I have a lot of fitness goals: losing weight, competing in figure skating, getting strong, increasing endurance, socialising, pushing my flexibility to the limit, and most importantly, chasing that addictive flow of exercise. But since deciding that, rather than searching daily for a variety of youtube tutorials that don’t necessarily meet my needs, I wanted to take control of my exercise path and set my own targets, goals and challenges, I have felt, not to put too fine a point on it, hugely overwhelmed. There are too many things I want to do, not enough time to do them, and my memory isn’t even good enough to remember half of the exercises I know.
I’ve joined a gym, intending to spend 3-4 sessions a week at the gym with and without my partner and friend. During these sessions, we will each set one calisthenics goal and one flexibility goal. Each session will be dedicated to two of those goals.
I also want to continue with yoga, but I want to be able to put together my own practices, and not constantly search for videos that, once I start watching them, cover almost entirely exercises I am already familiar and confident with.
When gymnastics classes have space, I want to join those too, but in the meantime, figure skating proficiency is the ultimate goal of all this. I have the same problem with skating that I do with the other areas - namely, that I can’t remember most of the exercises I want to practice, so I end up being limited to what I can actually remember. I also have the problem in skating of beign intimidated by the other skaters, uncertain of when it’s okay to take up space and when I need to cede space. So these are all the things I need to work on.
