Unlocking the Mystery of 6174: The Fascinating Journey of Kaprekar's Constant
Introduction
Dattatreya Ramchandra Kaprekar (Marathi: दत्तात्रेय रामचंद्र कापरेकर; 17 January 1905 – 1986) was an Indian recreational mathematician who discovered the intriguing number known as Kaprekar's constant, named in his honour. Despite lacking formal postgraduate education and working as a schoolteacher, he published extensively and gained recognition in the field of recreational mathematics.
Definition
Kaprekar's constant is a special number in recreational number theory, and it’s equal to 6174. It’s associated with an interesting iterative process for four-digit numbers known as the Kaprekar routine.
Kaprekar Process
Choose any four-digit number (with at least two different digits). If the number has fewer than four digits, pad it with leading zeros. The key is that the number must have at least two distinct digits.
Rearrange the digits of the number to form the largest possible number and the smallest possible number.
The largest number is formed by arranging the digits in descending order.
The smallest number is formed by arranging the digits in ascending order.
Subtract the smaller number from the larger one.
Repeat the process with the result. No matter what number you start with, you will always eventually reach 6174in at most 7 iterations.
Here are my GitHub gists for both Python & Ruby. Output is given below.

Conclusion
Kaprekar's constant, 6174, is a captivating example of the beauty and mystery inherent in mathematics. Through the simple yet intriguing Kaprekar process, we see how a seemingly random sequence of operations consistently leads to this unique number. This phenomenon not only highlights the creativity and curiosity of Dattatreya Ramchandra Kaprekar but also serves as a reminder of the endless wonders that can be discovered within the realm of numbers. Whether you're a seasoned mathematician or a curious learner, exploring Kaprekar's constant offers a delightful journey into the world of recreational mathematics.
