5 Steps to Maximise Value as a Product Lead
Working in product management has been an incredibly rewarding experience for me, especially when utilising the Agile Methodology, specifically Scrum and Kanban (with my personal favorite being "ScrumBan" – I'll explain that later 🤪!). This approach helps fulfill Product Owner responsibilities. While some companies divide these roles, it's vital for Product Managers and Product Owners to share the same objectives, regardless of their titles.
As a Product Lead, it's key to collaborate not only with UI/UX Designers, Developers, and Software Engineers but also engage with users and customers to understand their needs and gather feedback. Additionally, partnering with external stakeholders, managing expectations, and aligning with teams like Customer Success and Product Marketing are crucial for each release.
Empowering the Product Lead as the team captain helps prevent frequent scope creep and manage risks effectively.
In the Scrum context, the focus is on maximising business value, which I consider the primary responsibility.
To achieve this:
1. Establish a Product Vision and a long-term Product Goal for clear direction🧭 .
2. Deliver at least one increment meeting the Definition of Done within or after a sprint to drive maximum product value💫.
3. Continuously gather feedback from users through regular releases to gain a competitive advantage🏇. This reminds me of one element of the Agile Manifesto: Customer collaboration over Contract Negotiation.
4. Embrace an agile mindset by inspecting work through Reviews, being transparent, adapting to feedback, and prioritizing items on the Product Backlog as needed based on market trends📈📉.
5. Communicating the product vision and goals to the team ensures that the lead's decisions are respected and embraced📝.
