Helping People with Disabilities: Fostering Inclusion Through AI
In the Asia-Pacific region, where nearly 60% of the world’s population of persons with disabilities resides, many individuals still face substantial barriers to achieving full societal participation. Accessibility limitations, social stigma, and restricted access to assistive technologies contribute to an environment where people with disabilities encounter daily challenges in employment, education, healthcare, and public spaces. These barriers prevent millions from realizing their fundamental human rights and participating equally in society.

Key Challenges Faced by People with Disabilities in the Asia-Pacific Region
Limited Access to Assistive Technology: High costs, limited availability, and lack of awareness prevent many people with disabilities from obtaining essential tools like screen readers, Braille displays, and mobility aids. Recent data shows that access to these technologies in low- and middle-income APAC countries is critically low, with only 5–15% of those in need having access to assistive devices. This scarcity significantly limits independence and opportunities.
Social Stigmas and Barriers: Many communities in the Asia-Pacific region still hold stigmatizing views about disabilities, leading to discrimination in employment, education, and social participation. For example, persons with disabilities face a higher unemployment rate than the general population, often due to employers’ assumptions about their capabilities.
Inaccessible Public Infrastructure: Despite some progress, many public spaces and services across the region remain inaccessible. This lack of physical accessibility, such as absence of ramps or elevators, excludes people with disabilities from basic social activities and essential services, particularly in rural and underdeveloped areas.
