Welcome to ChaoticGoodCyber.tech
Welcome, and thank you very much for visiting ChaoticGoodCyber.tech. This is my very first “go live” post, where I’ll explain the purpose of this website. I’ll cover the who, what, where, when, and how. The why will come later. If you’ve already explored the website and social media profiles you probably have a good idea of the why and how this platform will be used, but I’ll break it down a bit to make sure it’s clear.
The Who
Just me. Apart from included content and cited sources, these words are mine and mine alone. That being said, I am employed so I’ll include the following disclaimer: The views expressed here are my own and do not reflect those of my employer.
So who am I? My name is Mauricio. My username on almost every platform is “emTr0” or “emTr0x”. I’m half Bolivian and half Puerto Rican, and was born and raised in New Jersey. I spent over a decade as a law enforcement officer for a southern California agency. It was a fulfilling career that provided me with a lot of experience and opportunities. Make no mistake though, I was also a political minority in that environment.
I was considered a liberal, progressive, woke, take your pick. I avoided political conversations because I didn't need any drama at work. I was very active on social media but I worked hard to separate my online life from my professional life, one of the many reasons being I was publicly very critical of conservatives. Unfortunately, a colleague I connected with online betrayed my trust and shared my profiles and identity with a local ultra-conservative account, which I suspect led to the banning/closure of my original Instagram profile through mass false reporting.
Moving on. I finished my career as a detective in the threat management unit, primarily responsible for investigating reported threats of mass violence and terrorism. I was also a crisis/hostage negotiator and adjunct instructor for the college and police academy. I’m a self-taught programmer and cybersecurity enthusiast. I’ve always been interested in the technology space but I had a late start. Knowing I would eventually transition out of law enforcement, I obtained relevant training and certifications in computer programming and cybersecurity. All of these experiences provided me with the opportunity to work professionally in cybersecurity today, and ultimately put me in a position with the necessary background to start this website.
The What
The tagline and website description for ChaoticGoodCyber.tech sum up this website’s purpose:
“Disrupting oppression through digital empowerment. Helping improve the safety, security, and privacy of marginalized communities.”
So what does that mean and what can you expect to eventually watch, listen, and read? My mission is to help counter digital repression tactics, promote digital rights and freedoms, and empower marginalized communities and activists by providing the necessary resources for improving our safety, security and privacy. In a nutshell.
As for how I came up with “Chaotic Good Cyber”, I took that page out of the Dungeons and Dragons book. A chaotic good character is someone who fundamentally believes in doing what is right and just, prioritizing personal freedom and individual conscience over strict adherence to laws and societal norms. These characters are driven by a strong moral compass that guides their actions toward helping others and improving the world, but they prefer to do so on their terms rather than following established rules or authority. Given who will represent that authority for at least the next few years, I felt like something like this was necessary. To share a famous quote, “People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.” Knowledge is power.
I know there may be other sites with a similar purpose or mission but my goal is not to be the only or best source. I want to be a force multiplier by providing another source for anyone in need to discover this type of information, and to amplify other voices already involved in this type of work.
The Where, When and How
The main platform will be ChaoticGoodCyber.tech with sharing to social media networks like Instagram, Threads, Facebook, X/Twitter (I know, but we can't be silent there), Mastodon, and YouTube. I also plan on having discussions with professionals and advocates in this space and would like to share those in the form of podcasts and videos across multiple platforms. If you share these views and agree on their importance, please connect with me at the following accounts and help share:
…and finally…
This website is a work in progress but I wanted to at least get things going with a “letter of intent”.
If you have a topic, person, mobile app, website, or anything you believe needs to be shared and spotlighted here to maximize their exposure as a resource, please don't hesitate to contact me. All of this page’s social media profiles are linked in this post and the header but I will create a “contact” page with additional options.
