[Practices] Taking Notes

Trivial as it seems, This practice is one of the most powerful actions one can do.

Why do I need notes?

  • Our minds are not the most reliable source of truth: Thoughts tend to mutate over time.

  • Human brains are not great at dealing with many thoughts simultaneously or for extended durations: Think of this as a hard-limit for the size of Context Window in a Large Language Model (LLM) like ChatGPT, or Random Access Memory (RAM) where eventually the OS would have to evict some data to have place for other. Though these are oversimplifications; they’re close enough.

  • Thoughts are volatile.

  • It feels good to offload what’s on your mind + A note will never judge its author.

  • Helps you keep track of your life.

  • And many other obvious and not so obvious reasons.

Tips

  • Don’t worry too much about structure: Structure should follow the stream of the thought. Rarely the other way around.

  • Write down a thought as soon as it passes through your mind: as if you’re catching a butterfly.

  • Use the most convenient and accessible medium to you: A notebook, Notion, Obsidian, etc… Whatever has the minimum friction and the highest accessibly to you is perfectly fine.

  • Utilize notes to delegate thinking about low urgency thoughts: Not all ideas require immediate attention, consider investing mental effort in such ideas when you have the capacity to do so.

  • Never shy away from writing down an immature note: Even a single word note is more than ok if it means something to you, And It can always grow more maturely with time.
