The Duha and Tahajud prayers are two highly recommended acts of worship in Islam. While they are not obligatory, they hold immense significance as emphasized by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) due to their extraordinary spiritual and worldly benefits. This article delves deeper into these prayers and explains why they seem "almost obligatory" for Muslims striving to enhance their spiritual lives.

Duha Prayer

Evidence of the Virtues of Duha Prayer

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"In the morning, every joint of your body has a charity due on it. Every tasbih (saying Subhanallah) is a charity, every tahmid (saying Alhamdulillah) is a charity, every tahlil (saying La ilaha illallah) is a charity, every takbir (saying Allahu Akbar) is a charity, and enjoining good and forbidding evil is a charity. All of this can be accomplished through two rak’ahs of prayer in the forenoon."
(Hadith reported by Muslim, no. 720)

This hadith illustrates that the Duha prayer is a substitute for the daily acts of charity, making it highly recommended for every Muslim.

Timing of Duha Prayer

The Duha prayer is performed when the sun has risen significantly (approximately 15 minutes after sunrise) until just before the time for Dhuhr prayer. The minimum number of rak’ahs is two, but it can be extended to eight or even twelve, depending on one's ability and devotion.

Spiritual and Worldly Benefits

  1. Opens the doors of sustenance and blessings.

  2. Cultivates gratitude for health and strength.

  3. Provides inner peace and strengthens the connection with Allah.

Tahajud Prayer

Evidence of the Virtues of Tahajud Prayer

Allah says in the Qur'an:

"And during the night, pray Tahajud as an extra worship for you; it is expected that your Lord will raise you to a praised station."
(QS. Al-Isra: 79)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also said:

"The best fasting after the month of Ramadan is during Allah’s month of Muharram. And the best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer."
(Hadith reported by Muslim, no. 1163)

This hadith confirms that Tahajud is the most superior voluntary prayer after the obligatory ones.

Timing of Tahajud Prayer

The Tahajud prayer is performed after the Isha prayer and before the Fajr prayer, with the most virtuous time being the last third of the night. The minimum is two rak’ahs, and there is no maximum, although the Prophet frequently prayed eight rak’ahs followed by three rak’ahs of Witr.

Spiritual and Worldly Benefits

  1. Deepens one’s connection with Allah through sincere devotion.

  2. Facilitates the acceptance of prayers and repentance.

  3. Purifies the heart and brings tranquility to the mind.

  4. Secures Allah’s forgiveness and mercy.

Are They Almost Obligatory?

Highly Emphasized Sunnah (Muakkadah)

Both prayers remain sunnah, meaning they are not obligatory and missing them does not incur sin. However, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) strongly encouraged their performance due to their immense benefits. For instance, companions like Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet emphasized the importance of Duha and Tahajud, especially for those capable of performing them consistently.

A Choice for Those Seeking Closeness to Allah

For Muslims aiming to become among the chosen servants of Allah, consistently performing Duha and Tahajud prayers is a sign of love and obedience to Him. In daily life, these prayers serve as a key to achieving blessings and inner peace.

Special Rewards for the Pious

The Tahajud prayer is often regarded as a "special act" for those who aspire to be closer to Allah, while the Duha prayer provides tangible worldly benefits, such as ease in sustenance and improved well-being.

Conclusion

The Duha and Tahajud prayers are two acts of worship highly emphasized in Islam. While they are not obligatory, regularly performing them signifies strong faith and helps build a closer relationship with Allah. If you are able, incorporate these prayers into your daily routine, as they bring immense benefits in both this world and the hereafter. By practicing Duha and Tahajud, may your life become more blessed, peaceful, and meaningful.
