I’ve always thought that the first indicator of any seniority in a software engineer is when they understand that committing the code is just the beginning. A huge part of our job is maintenance — making sure (not only our) stuff works and keeps working for its users. And it’s about understanding the full product you’re working on, and the whole system, and the systems that system is part of or interacts with.
