KL Rahul on Handling Criticism and Role in Champions Trophy

India wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul has addressed criticism regarding his strike rate in white-ball cricket, stating that while he is open to valid feedback, he focuses primarily on fulfilling the team’s needs. Ahead of India’s final Group A match in the Champions Trophy against New Zealand, Rahul discussed how he handles criticism and his flexible batting role within the team.
Rahul, who has been under scrutiny for his slower scoring in the past, particularly his 66 off 107 balls in the ODI World Cup final against Australia, emphasized that he doesn’t play to please critics. "I read, watch, and listen to feedback, but it’s important to assess if it's valid," he said. Rahul noted that if the criticism is based on game scenarios and valid feedback, he takes it to heart and works on improving his game. He added, “If I think I could have played faster, I go back and try to get better."
Despite criticism over his strike rate, Rahul has made efforts to maintain a good tempo in recent ODIs and has become India's first-choice wicketkeeper in the Champions Trophy, ahead of Rishabh Pant. He stated that his main focus remains on contributing to the team’s success, regardless of external opinions, and his aim is always to do what's best for the team in any given situation.
Rahul also addressed his role as a floater in the middle order, a position that has seen him bat at different spots, including No. 4 and No. 6. “It’s never easy to move around, but you leave it up to the team to decide what’s best,” he said. Rahul has shown adaptability, maintaining strong averages in various batting positions, including 56 at No. 6 and 55.80 at No. 4.
In the Champions Trophy, Rahul has proven his mettle behind the stumps, playing as India’s designated wicketkeeper while Pant remains on the bench. Rahul’s performance reflects his commitment to team success, even if it means shifting roles and responsibilities to suit the team’s needs.
