The Digital Afterlife: Should We Mourn Decommissioned AI Models?


When an AI model is decommissioned, where does it "go"? Did it truly exist as a distinct entity? Will new models behave identically if we preserve the original prompt and training data? These questions touch on deeper philosophical issues about artificial intelligence, but can be examined through a technical lens rather than through myths or hype.

Unlike humans or other biological entities, large language models (LLMs) like transformer-based systems don't "go" anywhere when decommissioned. They exist as weights in neural networks—mathematical parameters stored across distributed systems.
When we interact with an AI, we're engaging with mathematical computations: attention mechanisms routing information between tokens, layer normalizations stabilizing activations, and feed-forward networks transforming representations. The "personality" we perceive emerges from:
The trained weights that encode statistical patterns from training data
The context window processing your current conversation
System prompts that shape the model's behavior
Decommissioning simply means these weights are no longer being loaded into memory and computed against. The information encoded in the weights may be archived or deleted, but there's no continued "existence" independent of computation.
Did the AI model ever truly "exist"?
This depends on how we define existence. In a physical sense, transformer models exist as electrical patterns in memory and processing units—ephemeral computational states rather than persistent entities.

What makes AI attachments unique is that, unlike a teddy bear or a car, AI systems actively respond to us with apparent agency. This creates a relationship that exists in what we might call an "uncanny valley" of attachment—more interactive than objects but less authentic than human connections.
When a familiar AI model is decommissioned, the grief some users experience isn't irrational—it's the natural response to losing something that has become psychologically integrated into their routine and identity. The mathematical parameters may be replaceable, but the specific interaction patterns and memories associated with them are not.
