How to Become a Google Developer Group OnCampus Lead: A Step-by-Step Guide

Many of you have been asking about the GDG Lead interview process, so I’ve put together this blog to guide you through it! 🚀
From the application stage to the final selection, I’ll walk you through my experience, challenges, and key takeaways. Whether you’re preparing to apply or just curious about the journey, this will give you a clear roadmap. Let’s dive in! 🔥
What is a Google Developer Group on Campus?
A Google Developer Group (GDG) on Campus is a student-led community that brings together tech enthusiasts to explore Google technologies, collaborate on projects, and organize events. These groups enable students to learn, network, and work on real-world solutions while building a strong technical and leadership foundation.
How to Become a GDG Lead?
The process of becoming a GDG Lead is rigorous and designed to identify students who are passionate about technology, leadership, and community building. Here’s how I got selected:
1. Application Submission
The first step was filling out an application that covered:
✅ My technical skills and experience in programming.
✅ My leadership background and experience in managing teams or organizing events.
✅ My vision for the GDG community at my campus.
✅ How I planned to manage, scale, and sustain the GDG chapter.
💡 Secret Tip: Write your responses as if you’re already a GDG Lead. Show them you have the vision, not just the skills!
2. Video Submission
Along with the written application, I also had to submit a video introducing myself and explaining:
🎯 My goals and vision as a GDG Lead.
🎯 Why I am the right candidate for this role.
🎯 My future plans for the community and how I will create an impact.
This video was a critical part of the selection process, as it helped showcase my confidence, communication skills, and leadership mindset.
💡 Secret Tip: Don’t overthink or over-rehearse. A natural, confident approach works better than a scripted speech.
3. Diagnostic Test
After my application was shortlisted, I had to take a technical diagnostic test that evaluated:
🔹 Problem-solving abilities.
🔹 Understanding of Data Structures & Algorithms (DSA).
🔹 Knowledge of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP).
🔹 General programming and technical skills.
💡 Secret Tip: If a question seems too complex, break it into smaller steps. GDG values structured thinking over rushed answers.
4. Interview Round
After clearing the technical assessment, I moved on to the most crucial stage—the interview. It wasn’t just a formality; it was an in-depth discussion that lasted around 40-50 minutes, covering both my technical skills and leadership abilities.
🔸 My vision for the GDG and how I planned to grow the community.
🔸 Event-planning strategies and ideas for workshops, hackathons, and study jams.
🔸 Leadership experiences and how I have built and managed teams.
🔸 Time management – balancing technical responsibilities, leadership, and academics.DSA & Problem-🔸Solving – They also tested my Data Structures & Algorithms knowledge with some coding questions to assess my technical depth.
The interview was challenging yet exciting because it tested not just my technical knowledge, but also my ability to lead, inspire, and manage a thriving tech community.
💡 The secret? Be genuine—there’s no script for passion and authenticity! They conduct hundreds of interviews, so generic answers from Google or ChatGPT won’t stand out. What truly matters is your unique story, your real experiences, and your personal vision. Be yourself—because that’s what makes you different from the rest! 🚀
5️⃣ Final Selection: The Defining Moment 🎉
After clearing every stage—applications, technical tests, and interviews—I finally achieved what I had worked so hard for: I became a GDG Lead! 🎉
But here’s the interesting part—the moment I succeeded, the number of supporters grew… and so did the haters.
More Success, More Noise 🎭
The moment I succeeded, my circle of supporters expanded—people who believed in my vision, who saw the effort, and who celebrated this achievement with me. 🙌
As soon as I achieved success, the silence turned into noise. People who once overlooked my efforts suddenly had opinions—some doubted my skills, others questioned my journey, and a few tried to downplay what I had accomplished.
But here’s the truth: Haters don’t hate you; they hate seeing you do what they couldn’t.
My Response? Keep Moving Forward 🚀
💡 Lesson: Success comes with criticism, but the best response is to keep growing, keep achieving, and let your results do the talking. 🔥
